The thing on the wall was a telephone device where one inserted coins and was able to make phone calls, often limited in time resulting in more coins being deposited.

A coin was a metal piece of currency representing an amount under a dollar, such as a half-dollar, or a quarter dollar. Eventually dollar coins also became available, but the pay phones did not accept them. Most only accepted smaller denominations, such as dimes and nickels, or quarters.
