I was just wondering if anyone has been enjoying The Great British Bake Off or as it was known on PBS here in the USA as The Great British Baking Show.

what is this.......this "baking" you speak of? ;)

It's what one does to a potato. I'm told bread, cake and pie as well.

However, in reference to this board I have heard the term "half baked" used to reference some escorts. In fact I have known a few.

I think you're trying to fool us WG. Street talk has it that you are an expert at baking some snack foods? What you do with them...well, up to our imaginations!!! WG2

Gar1eth, I'll try and find it. Cooking and baking are my stabs at being creative. View it is my hobby. I have almost completely stopped watching the major news networks and the political coverage. I simply can't stand it anymore with all the insanity and stupidity going on. And, to think there will be 5+ months left! What a waste of individuals sucking up oxygen. Anyhoo, I have switched to watching reruns of the FoodNetwork stuff, and Law and Order!!! I will definitely take a look at it. Sounds like a fun diversion. Thanks, WG2

Seriously I do like to cook even if it is only every five years when I bake cookies. However, I have been disappointed in the Food Network. They have all these silly contests where one has to make and get graded on a dish based on a jar of kosher pickles and a bag of marshmallows as the main ingredients. Of course the contestant blackens the marshmallows and gets eliminated. Years ago they actually gave you recipes and hints on how to be a wiz in the kitchen. I miss that!

In any event, I'll take the Food Network over the other crap that has been and will be occupying our brethren who frequent the Political Forum here. If I'm going to post "down there" it will be in the Arts Forum. However, I have been know to post in the Fetish Forum as well... and at times even referencing some baked snack foods as well!

I love, love, love the Great British Baking Show. I watched both seasons on PBS, and then rewatched it on Netflix, even though I knew the final outcomes. It is so much better than any of the crappy cooking shows on Food Network, etc., we have. Holy canoli, how can ANYbody watch that Godawful Guy Fiere and his shitty Diners and Dives? Or Rachel Ray? or "Chopped"? It's not that the British cooking shows are that much better with regard to their content; they're just presented so much better. I couldn't swallow one bit of what Nigella Lawson throws together on her show but I just love watching her do it. She gets orgasmic over squid ink pasta and rapturous over pancakes, and it's really delightful. I used to enjoy Ina Garten, "The Barefoot Contessa", but she just got too cute and twee for me after a while. And I found her catchphrases really irritating "How bad can that be?" "Don't have any fun until I get back." "It's not a barbecue until the fire truck arrives." "Jeffrey's going to love this." You should watch Jay Mohr's riff on her! I sometimes watch "Martha Bakes" on Sunday afternoons but her recipes are so damn complicated and her insistence on perfection makes me a nervous wreck. I'd kill to have her kitchen equipment, though. She has the perfect tool for every task, and they're always sparkling, polished, shiny. My mixer has caked on icing along the rim, and I can never get my whisks completely clean. Jacques Pepin is kind of relaxing, and his recipes are doable. I was a big fan of "America's Test Kitchen" and "Cook's Country" but they're gone now. Those shows were really all about the cooking and that brings me back to the Great British Baking Show, which is really just all about the cooking or in their case, the baking. Which reminds me, I've got an apple tarte in the oven that needs glazing!!

I enjoy the show as well. Sometimes the flavor combinations are a bit weird for American tastes, but the technical skills involved are impressive. I wish they'd make the recipes available on line, when I see something I'd like to try myself.

Although I'm not a baker, I watched both seasons of the Great British Baking Show and loved them both. Can't wait for the next season!

Some interesting facts. PBS renamed the show for some reason. In Britain it's called The Great British Bake Off. While it was season 1 here, it was actually the 5th season. Then they showed Season 4 as PBS Season 2. Also I've been looking online for information. It's not a given that PBS will show another season. :(

We have tried making it in America twice. The first was in 2013. It was called The American Baking Competition on CBS. The host was Jeff Foxworthy. I don't remember it. They brought over hunky British baker Paul Hollywood from Britain.

Paul had an affair with his American chef co-host Marcella Valladolid while he was here.

But that apparently was the only cooking going on. The show failed to catch on. The failure might have been the best thing for Paul. He and his wife reconciled.

ABC just tried a 4 episode remake over the holidays called The Great American Holiday Baking Show (the continual nomenclature change makes me wonder if the term Bake Off is copyrighted by Pillsbury).

This time they brought over famous baker Mary Berry from the original in Britain.

And they paired Mary up with handsome but overly jeweled (and apparently straight) celebrity American baker Johnny Iuzinni.

Unfortunately they picked as hosts Nia Vardalos and her husband Ian Gomez (who has lost a lot of weight).

I don't know if it was the editing or not. But they are no Sue (Perkins) and Mel (Giedroyc) -the hosts of the British original. (Sue is gay by the way).

Mel and Sue interact with the contestants much more and don't seem as fake as Nia and Ian.

I'm betting the ratings weren't very good for this American version either.:(

Ha, HA! whipped guy says he's "whipped up" a few delights! Are we talking food, or...?!!

I find myself enjoying any of Lidia Bastianich's cooking shows on PBS! If you want to see some excellent Italian cooking, you can't go wrong. Locally, we have one of Lidia's Italian restaurants and the food is piuttosto deliziosa!!!

I did see the Great British Bake Off season specific to dessert baking. I had no idea how useful a basic sponge cake recipe can be in desserts!

I'm multi-talented, on a good day I definitely could give Lidia more than a run for her money. I doubt she could make a better traditional lasagna than I, not to mention a few other Italian specialties.

Lidia has a restaurant named Becco in NYC that I have been to for a wine and hors d'oeuvres reception. It was quite nice. Moreover, what was being being served in the restaurant proper looked quite appetizing. Consequently it's on my to do list.

It may be weird but I can't stand that seemingly everything has become a contest, pitting one person against another. Many cooking shows have become nothing more than culinary car races, particularly the ones where a contestant is shamed as they are forced to leave the show. Of course, there are many still in the traditional format (A Chef's Life, America's Test Kitchen, Lidia's various shows) and I enjoy them.

The British Baking Show is fascinating. The flavour combinations are weird, but there's no shaming, and there appears to be genuine affection amongst the contestants.

I live in a town that has Italian food as it's virtually single cuisine. If I had to watch an Italian cooking show, it would be like the Boychick Alex DeLarge [Malcolm MacDowell] in A Clockwork Orange.

Of all the cooking/baking programs, the one I most enjoyed for quality and interaction was the "Two Fat Ladies."

The 'Two Fat Ladies' was not a competition it was more a documentary, sadly both of them have passed away. I loved the show. When diagnosed with lung cancer, Jennifer Paterson, a smoker, said 'Why would I give up smoking, I already have cancer'. In one episode, they turned up at a van that sold bacon butties (bacon in a bread roll), and it took seven takes to film the event for the show. Apparently Clarissa ate a butty for each of the takes.

Two Fat Ladies collecting eggs:

"Where are you going to put your eggs, dear?"

"I thought I'd use my helmet. [They had a motorcycle with side car.] What are you going to use?"

"I thought I'd use my BRA-ziaye" [brassiere].

"You're not taking off in front of the COCKERAL?!??"

I also enjoy The Great British Baking Show, but that Sue irritates the hell out of me. In every episode, she says something snarky about Paul and, for the life of me, I can't figure out why. If he had done something on-screen to deserve the snarkiness, it might follow but it usually comes across as plain old mean. I do admire the talent of some of the contestants. They seem to have a knack that eludes me.

Martha Stewart also has the knack and the more I watch her, the more I'm tempted to try some of her stuff. She's all about the ingredients and the thing that stops me in my tracks is locating the ingredients she uses. One of these days, I'm going to find some really good cocoa and chocolate and make one of her flourless cakes.

The Two Fat Ladies are a hoot! I missed them on TV but a nearby library has all four seasons and I'm ready to check them out again.

OK, for those who have read thus far, here's an easy-peasy recipe for some delicious cheese cookies. Warn your guests that they're savory, not sweet, but everyone I've made them for loves them. http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/want/t2801.gif

Cheese cookie recipe

(makes 50 cookies)

4 oz sharp cheddar, grated (1 cup)

1 cup flour

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp ground cayenne pepper (more red pepper if you like 'em hot)

1/2 tsp tabasco

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1 1/8 sticks butter, melted*

1 cup Rice Krispies

* not sure why you couldn't get away with just one stick of butter, but this is the recipe I got from a friend and it's never let me down

  • Combine all ingredients except Rice Krispies in a large bowl and add melted butter and mix with your hands to form the dough.

  • Add the Rice Krispies and mix again with your hands.

  • Allow dough to cool so it will be easier to form.

  • Roll the dough into 1-inch balls on an ungreased cookie sheet.

  • Flatten them with a fork to get lines on the tops of the cookies.

  • Bake at 350° for 16 –18 minutes depending on your oven.

  • Let cool on paper towels.

Oooh, recipes.

My favorite recent find (NOT from a TV show) was Double Chocolate banana bread.

(Yay! Bananas! Healthy!)

Use any standard banana bread recipe you like, but substitute cocoa powder for half of the flour. For extra points stir in a cup of chocolate chips.

It stays a little gooey, so leave it in the oven about 4 minutes longer than you think it needs.

Your morning coffee will thank you.
