In the rather Conservative Village I grew up in (home of the late Paul Harvey, the News and Comment guy), the whole school would walk about four blocks to the local Field. There, we would celebrate May Day with a big picnic and games.

We had square dancing every Tuesday for six years. An especially memory is the Sixth Graders doing square dancing, including a Virginia reel. It was a seven-minute dance done without calls.

The finale every year was the Senior Girls doing a Maypole Dance with plait. Unfortunately, I can't find a good video of it.

Happy May Day!

P.S. The school was sold to a Montessori school, and later razzed to make way for four McMansions at an average cost of $1.4 million.
