Into it's second season, an Amazon original series, Mozart in the Jungle is a somewhat silly soap opera about a fictitious New York symphony orchestra. I know, seems like a big yawn but it offers some relief from the usual blood and gore that goes for popular entertainment. For me however the big draw is it's star, Gael Garcia Bernal, the eccentric conductor. For a short, skinny not terribly handsome guy there's something sexy as hell about him. I'd like to get ahold of his baton.

It's hit and miss. I just finished watching the 2nd season. Some episodes are really good but then some really suck (the two episodes on the Mexican tour were god awful). But you're right the reason to watch is Bernal. Not necessarily because he's sexy but because he is FREAKIN' HILARIOUS! The obvious parody of Gustavo Dudamel (who has a cameo in the 2nd season and looks fat and ugly -- already!) is just so spot on. Also, as someone who has sat on several boards I find the board stuff really good. Also, Deborah Monk is killing it as the principal oboist. On the minus side, the young female lead has all the charisma of a wet piece of iceberg lettuce. Get the hook. I'd rather see much more on her on again, off again, dancer boyfriend.

On what planet is Garcia Bernal not handsome?

Works for me. :)

the piano solo by lang lang at the end of one episode was fun to see

Mostly because he lived up to his reputation as "bang bang." The guy has no subtlety whatsoever, he just bangs away.

I haven't seen the movie, but I did read the book, which was centered around an individual (female performing musician), not an orchestra. Did any other forum member read the book?

I'm not sure I'd call him handsome. Cute, perhaps. Lots of charisma helps.

Looks like someone on Survivor. I find him mildy attractive but not handsome. And when he opens his mouth there are those big crooked chompers. Big turn off for me.

Congrats to him and the show for winning Golden Globes! Variety went absolutely ballistic that he and the show won over Transparent (does anyone find that show actually funny?). It was worth it for that.

Yeah. It's strange about his teeth. These days you expect everyone, certainly actors to have perfect teeth. I would like to say it's charming, like a crooked nose or ears that stick out, but bad teeth are a turnoff. We certainly agree on that. I didn't watch the Golden Globes but I'm glad he won even though it's a rather ridiculous award. As for Transparent, I really like this show. It actually makes me uncomfortable at times but I mean that in a good way. I wouldn't call it funny however.

I liked the first season of Transparent probably because it was so different but mostly because Tambor was superb as was Judith Light. I didn't find a single one of the kids remotely appealing. Narcissitic jerks. All of them. That got wearing. I never made it past episode 3 of Season 2. More of the kids, No thanks. I think the "new car smell" had worn off for me. It also isn't really funny. It's a half hour drama, not a comedy.

Mozart I still enjoy because I can relate to the music scene it depicts.

Bad teeth. When I was younger I always wondered why English actors always opened their mouths so slightly when speaking. Then one of them actually opened it all the way and it was ghastly. Like they'd been hit by a car. I have this argument with my UK friends all the time who think "you Americans are obsessed with appearance." I don't think so (well, I do a bit) as I think it's a matter of hygiene not just looks. It looks SO PAINFUL, all those crooked teeth.

Bernal can be very attractive in a certain light and with certain camera angles but I don't think he's inherently as good looking as say Efron or Clooney. And then he opens his mouth and it's YIKES THOSE UGLY CHOMPERS!

Alternatively, I find those BIG BRIGHT FAKE LOOKING WHITE TEETH on some people just as bad as the blue contact lenses some guys were wearing in the 90s.

I have some Brit friends, some in high places. Teeth does seem to be an issue. But I do know people whose teeth look like chicklets and totally fake. There is a middle ground I'm sure. I did know a Brazilian dancer who wore very fake blue contact lenses. The effect was actually quite good. Sometimes fake is okay.

Chicklets. Perfect way to put it. Sometimes I see people with teeth that are so bright that I want them to close their mouths.

Blue contact lenses. Even if the effect is good, it's still fake and that bugs me a bit.
