Not exactly an outtake.

 

They used to perform that show twice every Saturday. They'd run it once with a studio audience for blocking, lighting, and camera angles. Then the audience would leave and they'd make adjustments, fix lighting and camera, etc., and bring in a new audience to do it all again "for air".

 

After the first run-through, Conway would often ask the director whether he got what he needed for air and then he'd go off script and completely destroy Harvey Kormann. "Blew your pilot light out" is an example of Vicki Lawrence doing the same.

 

It was comedians playing off comedians and for eleven years we got to see it every week on the TV machine.

I heard an interview with Carol Burnett over the holidays. One thing that stood out was her friendship with Lucille Ball. Lucy talked to her about having to take more responsibility & control of her shows after she and Desi Arnaz divorced, and had to be pretty forceful about a really bad script. Lucy said "That meeting was when they added an 's' at the end of my last name."
