My father was a barber and owned his own shop and one Christmas i got a Christmas stocking full of pennies, which I assiduously checked for date and mint mark. It was about 1000 pennies but it kept me busy for hours. Dividing and subdividing, S mint and D mint and unmarked, 20's and 30;s and 40;s and 50;s and 60;s. Starangely there was a large amount of hair in the pile and I was told that Santa was going bald. The hair was not white, but who was I to argue.[/QUOTe]

Besides the hair did you find anything good?

Not surprising I was able to fill my coin book with all the 50s and the few 60's also quite a few from the 40s and 30s with one or two from from the teens and a 1911 and 1912 S coins were rare finds as they probably did not make it to the east coast as easily. NO 1943 Copper No 1909 SVDB Very few in good condition. As best I can figure, these were coins used in transactions at the barber shop that my father put aside for me over the course of a year. Actually kind of nice to think he planned that over the course of several months. I can remember finding that 1911 and being delighted and a few coins later, the 1912. Really worn, not worth anything then and probably very little now.

My older brother collected coins and did exactly that. Bought those blue coin books at a hobby shop and filled them as he found the coins.

When I was 7 or 8 my brother (who is four years older than I) and I received a large wooden toboggan that could hold six adults or eight kids. That Christmas there was adequate snow for us to try it out. We went to a hill behind the house of some cousins and five of us went roaring down. We had failed to check for large rocks near the bottom. Sadly to say, we hit one large boulder head on and punched a hole in the rounded front. Five crestfallen youngsters made the sad journey to our house to show our father what hat happened. Amazingly to me now, he didn't make a fuss. He went to his workshop, found a large piece of tin and attached it to the front of the damaged toboggan. We used it in that condition for years. It wasn't pretty and wasn't as fast moving as before but it worked. I don't think I ever really thanked my father for his patience and kindness; I took it far too much for granted, so I'll take this opportunity to demonstrate the kind of man he was. And perhaps that was the best Christmas gift I ever received---not the toboggan but the love of a father for his sons.

The "Big Jim Camper"!

I'm probably aging myself terribly, but Big Jim was kind of an outdoorsy non-military GI Joe guy - back when the figures were the eight inch versions.

I had tons of GI Joe guys, the footlocker, jeeps, copters, etc. but that Christmas it was Big Jim and his camper under the tree. Loved playing "adventures" with Big Jim and GI Joe - going off camping together -- hmmm...perhaps I should have known even then! lol

The American Skyline building set. I have been a frustrated architect ever since!

Incidentally, because there were so many small components to it Santa wrote a note on the package saying that if I were not careful with it and did not clean up after I was finished playing with it that he would take it back.

I recognized the handwriting. That's when I first realized that the Santa thing was a hoax.
