William is definitely Mrs. Padmore.

Perhaps you should pay more attention to Mrs. Padmore. She is kind and considerate, a very nice person.

Mrs. Padmore is also excellent at her job.

I just watched season 2 again. One thing struck me: We're supposed to be horrified by Bryant pere's initial response to Ethel's running in and yelling "This is your grandson." I thought his response was pretty reasonable. Although Mr Bryant didn't know it, Ethel was lazy and openly told the other servants that she was hoping to advance socially. Maybe she didn't know who the father was but decided that Bryant was the best bet.

Fellowes has stated that the character of Thomas is reflective of the pressure a gay man endured during that period in history.

I agree with his assessment. Thomas has become a much more sympathetic character as the series has progressed. The audience knows his secret and how this motivates his actions. As Fellowes notes, the audience can forgive his behavior because we understand what he's up against.

I have trouble following this logic. I understand that he was frustrated and scared of being found out. But how does that explain his stealing and screwing over decent people?

Last episode tonight! I really appreciate anyone in this thread who exercised self-control about spoilers. Btw, I hear a movie may be a possibility? Not sure how I feel about that...ask me tomorrow! ;)

PS - as of today, I'm conflicted about the Thomas character ...maybe that's the point?

I'm all set for the final episode....got my wine all ready

I've enjoyed this season overall although I thought it started out rather slowly. And like Truereview, I am conflicted about the Thomas character as well.

My Sunday evenings won't be the same.....

I hope this isn't a spoiler alert...just watched the last episode and was disappointed. The only thing remotely interesting was Thomas' situation. TV movie episodes here we come...

Peace,

I only saw the last hour, not sure I even want to watch the part of the episode I missed.

Am I the only person that got Mrs. Hughes. At the very least I have her body. As for Thomas, my original complaint remains - he was always a straight man's conception of a gay man. At least they allowed him a little (not much) dignity in the final episode.

Well, I, for one, loved it. Yep, everything was wrapped up in a cute little bow and the love-matching was obscenely feverish, but that's the Downton I expected and got. Sometimes entertainment doesn't have to be harrowing, life-changing, unique...it just has to transport you, and since I'm just as easy of a lay as I am of a viewer, I got my rocks off over and over again. ;)Carry on!

I was happily surprised that Edith got a happy ending. Julian Fellowes always seemed to have it in for her. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. In their final shot in the car I expected them to be hit by a truck. All in all I was happy, and was glad to see them leave enough doors open for some future special episodes.

Folks: When do you know you've been reading the Forum too long? When you wonder if you missed a hot sex scene between the Marquess and Edith when in fact the poster meant a real "happy ending."

I found the finale to be very satisfying. My one secret desire that was not to be was for Martha Levinson to make an appearance at the wedding. That would have been the cherry on the sundae for me.

I wanted to push Edith down the stairs...yawn!

I understand completely. I felt the same way when she left her bottle of water on the mantle with no coaster!

I think a follow-up, "Made for TV movie" would be lovely. Or maybe two or three:

  1. Ten years after the death of the Dowager Duchess
  2. Beginning of the Great Depression (1929)

  3. Just at the start of WWII (ca. 1939)
  4. Just AFTER WWII
  5. Current day status

For those complaining about the final Downton episode it could have ended like this:

"Dowager Countess wakes up next to Dumbledore and it was all a dream."

So I finally watched the last episode. Not satisfied with wrapping everything up in a bow, they dumped a pound of sugar on top of it too.

After all that, why didn't they have Edith travel to Tangiers for a double wedding with Thomas and Andy?

Having watched finally the final season. Yes, the last episode was convenient in matching everyone but Thomas up. Poor Thomas did he actually ever get laid during the show. I assumed he went cottaging on his day off.

I was glad the last episode was about Edith's happiness and not Mary's. I can't stand Mary. I am not a huge fan of Edith, but if it closed with Mary getting married I would have thrown my shoe at the TV.

Curious - no one got Tom Branson yet? Allan Leech is certainly easy on the eyes! A few friends and I play a game when watching - we text each other "BB" for "Branson Bulge" when one of us spots it on screen :D

Just saw this thread, took the quiz, and got him.

You are Tom Branson. You’re hardworking, industrious and SUPER opinionated. You also have no problem letting everyone around you know what your opinions are, frequently and at length. At least you’ve learned to be a little bit less of a jerk about it over the years. You’ve got a lot of surprising talents, but you might still be still figuring out exactly what you want to do with them. But you're probably pretty handy around cars.

Here's what I expected to get. http://www.boytoy.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

You are the Hon. Creepwood "Creepy" Crawley. You're the family member no one talks about. If they could send you to India, they would, but you know where all the bodies are buried. You were once engaged to Lady Edith but she broke it off when her maid told her that you looked better in her evening gowns than she did. You are democratic to the core and often invite the stable boy to your room for advanced riding lessons.
