On the north side of East 53rd between Second and First. And it was not a dive. In fact I think it was a bit nicer than the current TownHouse a few blocks north of there. I worked nearby and dropped in after work for an upscale hamburger not realizing why it was full of very handsome young men in cashmere sweaters. It was on the street level of a townhouse. The well lit bar was in the back. After supper I repaired to the bar for a second beer before going home. Only when one of those drop dead gorgeous guys with a thick Italian accent started to chat me up did it dawn on me what was going on. Yes, Rounds was never a dive, far from it. Like @g56whiz, I went there by accident on a slow Sunday night. I wondered about all the cute guys, but quickly someone explained that they expected some financial compensation for their company.

 

I knew "Kurt" (see my post above) in 1991, since it's not his real name, I can give you a little of his background. He was a a college student and lived in a wealthy community with his parents. When I called his home, I always spoke to his mother first. The management did a very good job of blacklisting anyone who caused trouble in Rounds, or outside Rounds.

 

As I have written here before, that major benefit was meeting the guys in person before making a hiring decision. I still miss that in person contact all these years later.
