I have been in the Out. Done the In and Out in the Out and had an out and out good time in the Out. I have never been in the In crowd but i felt in in the Out, not on the outs. In all, the Out was all that. Out rageous, In comparible even if you are not out.

It has a lot of good reviews on Trip Adviser. But multiple bad ones too regarding noise from the nightclub which is connected in some way to the hotel. Multiple reviews mention it being really noisy with complaints of a thumping bass from the nightclub.

Here's one of the bad ones from Trip Adviser

"Probably the worst you can have in NYC for 300 USD/night. It is not a real hotel, mostly a motel. The location is not fantastic, but fine (42nd between 10th and 11th). The room itself was not so bad, but very noisy as the interconnecting door was not soundproofed. The majority of the guest stay at the hotel because at the ground floor there is a night club, which apparently is "the place to be". The hotel slogan is "straight frendly hotel", but it is not true. All the staff is gay and they look at people not gay like a stranger and seems they are thinking: but why this strange creature landed here? The room was not well cleaned as I have found an airline luggage tag under the drawer cabinet.

The general manager offered me a welcome present: look at the picture and enjoy if you can. Of course it went directly on the trash bin!"

Here's a video from two or three years ago made by a guest.

I did see the reviews regarding the dance club noise. I'm not going to be there on the weekend so I'm thinking it won't be so bad. I was most interested in hearing from individuals that have been there. Thanks, PK for your "poetic" review.

I was at the opening of this hotel (THE OUT) AND attended a gay wedding there as well. The gay couple who built is have since sold it. It's an ok place, the big bar and lounge and dance club on the first floor (separate rooms) IS very nice. The rooms are just adverage, many just look out into a glass covered open center space. BUT I AGREE, NOW it is more or less a typical Times Square tourist hotel that REALLY does not give you any more special an experience if you happen to be gay. (90% of the club venue is str8 bridge and tunnel ppl) IF THIS HOTEL WAS in Tumbleweed Texas etc it'd prolly be unique and packed with gays lol. But HERE, basing your stay on gay friendliness is like basing it on how close it is to a Starbucks :-) There's WAY better places to stay. You'd have a BETTER experience in a small West Village B&B :-)

Thanks for the great advice, everyone. It's been so long since I've lived in Manhattan that I was shocked at the hotel prices. I guess the price of The Out and the fact that it was "gay" clouded my judgement. (I knew the area was sketchy but chose to ignore it.). I've decided to stay at the Kimpton's The Muse.

My choice for a small room in a nice enough hotel for under $200 is the Pod, 145 E. 51st Street.

I use the term "nice enough" because the room is not large, but great double bed, bathroom, no club in the building and good location.

I have stayed at enough four star hotels on business trips to last a lifetime.

I had thought about staying there a few times. But I was either planning on an overnight with an escort or a weekend with one. And I thought it was just too cramped for two. Maybe it would be ok for two if you knew each other very well. But with a client/escort situation, even if you knew the guy well, I always thought it was helpful to have as much space as possible to spread out in.

Yes. The Pod is fine for a two-hour appointment, but not an overnight. My second choice is Incentra Village House at 32 8th Avenue. A bit more expensive, but much more space. There's a three-day minimum on weekends, but you can often get one night at the last minute. Highly Recommended.

I had a photo shoot at The Out a while ago. Stayed there a few nights, too. I heard that some guestrooms can get noisy at night, because part of it turns into a club. Mine got particularly noisy one night I was there, but that was for a different reason ;)

The glass covered sunning area was great - that's the part with the jacuzzis - which actually extends out from it for a ways. The pic of me draped naked on stepped plastic green "grass" was taken in another part of the hotel. I just took my clothes off and the photographer started shooting. No one said anything, and housekeeping was walking around us, too.

Just remembered, there's a pic of me with the photographer, that recently went up on my site... you can see the room I stayed in (it wasn't too cramped or shabby, fwiw).

But yeah, the whole thing about location - I'm with you guys on that. It's irritating to be on west 42nd. Gimme Chelsea, East Village, or Gramercy any day over that.
