Something that really helps me whenever I witness deliberate meanness or when it is directed at me is to remember that sadly with the advent of reality television shows rudeness, abusive behaviour and vicious attacks have not only been normalized, but celebrated for their high entertainment value.

 

It's not you. It's not the bully, it is the culture we live in. It's not personal.

 

This is specially true when we can hide behind our keyboard without seeing the actual effect our words have in others; it's so easy to dehumanize the other and learn to perceive the bullying as just an entertaining game with a fictitious character. But you are not a character, you are a human being with feelings and a life to be lived fully.

 

Sadly cyberbullies seem to enjoy the war of attrition they wage against their victims, seeing their victim broken little by little over a long period of time brings them enormous pleasure. My wish is that you were able to completely ignore and deflect the attacks, because if you are not hurt, it is not fun for the bully. In reality, though, I know keeping your cool might be a real challenge, so I hope you will be taking care of yourself by removing yourself from the situation.
