During his show this week, Limbaugh brought up the exchange and immediately rejected the idea because the Luther star is black. "James Bond was invented, created by Ian Fleming, a former spy, MI6, and James Bond is a total concept put together by Ian Fleming. He was white and Scottish, period.

I agree with you, Chris as it's about time for "NEW" James Bond as race shouldn't be a "factor" in this case as we now live in the 20th freaking century guys. Rush Limbaugh needs to take a hike as the old slavery is OVER and now in a new world entering into a new year. A black "James Bond" I think would be cool to see, and again, something fresh and new. Who knows - It might be a major success. . He is I have to admit very hot.

I recall upon first viewing Idris Elba in "Luther" this man should be the next James Bond. He's got the talent, the looks, and the attitude to pull off the role. I hope he is cast for the part.

 

Ian Fleming would likely turn over in his grave though. Fleming was racist and sexist which is apparent in many of the novels and his other writings.

 

Times change, Elba would be a great Bond. He'd be much better than Daniel Craig, who other than being nice to look at, is totally miscast in the role.

Truthfully, with the changing demographics of this country, in future, alot of the predominately white fictional characters may change race to appeal to a wider non-white demographic. It's all about the money folks. If changing the character's race (or sex for that matter) draws in more cash, it will happen sooner than later.

 

Will this happen anytime soon with a major character like James Bond? Probably not.

 

The point is it's a fictional character. As long as they have a good actor with a decent to great story, I don't care who plays the part. If they change the character for shock value or strictly to be "PC". You get people like Rush Limbaugh professing it's the end of the American culture and some such nonsense. It's only a movie.

Limbaugh is a racist [insert expletive of your choice here]. How else to explain that of all the actors famous for playing Bond, only one is himself a Scot? I don't remember the others putting on a Scottish accent to play the part.

 

Irrespective of Ian Fleming's personal politics, Bond is an archetype. All that is relevant is his status as MI6; thus, must be believably from the UK, which Elba is.

 

Then again, I don't know why anyone not already on the extreme right would pay attention to someone who accused a college student of being a prostitute for wanting affordable contraceptives.

The most amusing part of that whole episode was watching the blowhard LOUDLY and PROUDLY tell the world he knows absolutely nothing about basic biology or contraception. Apparently he thinks a woman needs to take a birth control pill every time she has sex.
