I have been wondering lately if any one has ever seen any statistical evidence, or has any anecdotal thoughts about the incidence of gay male escorts in the gay community vis a vis the incidence of female escorts in the heterosexual community. Is my perspective skewed from years of erotic consumerism that I have come to see escorting as a kind of right of passage for gay male youth between 18-24? What percentage of gay youth in those ages have escorted?

Interesting question.

Purely anecdotally, but judging from the great number of explicit escort ads in the gay press and online (particularly gaydar), I would guess that one-third of young gay men (21-35) in London are or have been working boys at some point.

It now seems a generally accepted way for guys to make ends meet.....

That was my bet too. Do you think that ismuch higher than for women? I once heard an even higher number among school girls in Japan.

No and No

If you take a conservative figure (such as four percent versus the more generally accepted ten percent figure) and then extrapolate by 2000 census figures as to males and by age, we are still talking several million young men between the ages of 18 and, just to follow the age range given thus far, 35. Even a cursory review of sites such as Men 4 Rent Now, All American Male, or Rent Boy, a very low percentage (less than one percent) are or have been escorts.

As for females, I am not sure how you would even quantify this data, although I am certain that we can get Secretary Rumsfeld to include this as part of a necessary scientific expense involved in the reconstruction of Iraq . . . .
