He did so much for Gay Rights by showing the world the unvarnished face of hatred. Many who were "on the fence" in their attitude towards us were horrified when confronted with vile actions of this man and his supporters.

Exactly. If anything, this organization has helped the cause of gay rights by showing bigotry in its most extreme form. No "love the sinner; hate the sin" here.

It helps that some of their hatred is so absurd that it's almost comical. Here's one of their websites, http://www.godhatestheworld.com/ . To quote the site, Click any country to find out why God hates that country.

The Los Angeles Times quoted the director of Equality Kansas as follows:

Thomas Witt, the executive director for Equality Kansas, was blunt: Don't celebrate Phelps' death, it's not appropriate. Donate some money to an LGBT advocacy group instead.

“We are asking that the LGBT community rise above all the anger we feel toward the Westboro Baptist Church and do what we’ve been asking the Phelps family do for 20 years, which is let us grieve in peace," Witt told The Times -- adding that the groups' executive committee was unanimous on this matter.

I donated online to The Kansas Equality Coalition, and an extra donation to my local LGBT center is in the mail. Just think of the impact we could have if everyone who reads and posts to this forum did the same.

i hope these donations were as a memorial to Phelps. May God have mercy on his soul... If He can stand him long enough.

Neither organization provides a way to make a donation in anyone's memory. However, in my email to the Kansas Equality Coalition's Executive Director I mentioned I was making the donation in response to his call for restraint. If you find a way to make a memorial donation when you make yours, please PM me for future reference.

Is it just me, or is this "rest in hell" type of response (not just from members posting but from people I encounter day to day regarding the subject) almost the same thing as what he preaches which is hate? I just feel sorry for humans who have issues with gay, black, Asian etc in general. To me it seems like the negativity towards the man is the same as him hating on gays.

Now given that my knowledge of what he has said and done is limited, aren't we better than him even with what he has said and done? Let's kill the fucker and his memory with kindness and forgiveness.

"RIP sir, you are forgiven for your absurdities and hatred"

This is the sign of the first counter-protest sign since his passing.

There's something about the asymmetric compassion that's absolutely beautiful.

Precisely, which is why that sign is so important...For me at least, at has many meanings and sends a powerful message from the LGBT community.

Xander made a very interesting post along the same lines that you are thinking. It is in the thread, "Westboro Baptist Church"....It is worth reading.
