My 12 lb male white/orange long haired Tabby got into a valerian capsule tonight.

SO far as I can tell, this isn't a bad thing, but he's a tad stoned, which doesn't

happen with him with catnip.

Any advice? I was worried, but a net search reassured me that it's probably okay.

And he hasn't been this mellow in a long time.

Any veterinarians out there?

I haven't heard of any veterinarians in our midst. It would be interesting if one of us were. As for the net search, how much I trusted it would depend on which websites. If it's from nationally-recognized veterinary organizations, you can probably trust the information. If it's just from some animal-lover without extensive education, I would be less likely to trust the information, and more likely to call my vet.

Poor little guy. I would definitely call the on call vet to make sure he's ok.

FreshFluff is right...call the 24 hour ER vet and ask for their advice.

There is a animal poison hot line. I had to call it last week when my dog ate 150 glucosamine and chondroiton supplements. They do charge, which the human poison control does not but it was reassuring.

Call Tufts Veterinary Hospital in Grafton. Their ER is open 24/7 and they are excellent. Right in our area. Keep the number on file for any future problems.

Charlie and the Valerian Capsule

Thank you all for your kind support! I knew about Tufts, but felt it was

OK just to keep him at home. I did watch him for quite a bit of time, and

he was just ... sedated, I think. It's hard to tell the difference.

Actually, some respected sites said that vets actually USE valerian as a sedative for cats. Much less toxic than valium, for instance.

And most of the articles said that cats are drawn to the stuff as though it were catnip.

I forget the lethal dose for a cat, but it's like 20 grams.

He was really mellow for the night (he's a pretty mellow cat anyway) and had no subsequent problems.

He was SO zonked, I actually tried to stroke his belly. One stroke later and he was all

paws / claws / and teeth. Normal for him, so I was OKAY with me going to sleep.

Stoned kitty~

How's he doing~? I take valerian and have been around enough pussy, (pussy cats that is), to know that some kitties really like to sniff the stuff~ they roll around on the floor, purrrrr, get all snuggley and silly, playful and loopy similar to the way catnip effects some fuzzy felines~

They don't generally eat it but roll all over it and sniff it~

There's lots of vet info on line and of course, consulting your vet is good advice as others have provided~

Hope he's back to his regular pussy cat self~ :-)

Thanks, Tyger. Does it effect you that way?

I think maybe he just rolled in it, and maybe licked a little. He's been normal since. I offered him a capsule to sniff, and

he had NO interest in it, and actually pulled away.

He also gets mellow with catnip. Again, I'm not sure I could tell the difference, as he's a pretty mellow cat

at baseline.

Thank you ALL for your input. I'll have to ask the vet when I see him later this month.
