I was at a performance of "When I was A Girl I used to Scream and Shout" in London in the 1980s. A few minutes before the curtain went up, a well dressed couple sat next to me. It was Amy Irving and Steven Spielberg who were married at the time. She and I got into a conversation and she was lovely, smart, and gorgeous. She told me her husband was in the process of casting "Empire of the Sun" and was at the play to see Julie Walters, whom he was considering for a role. At intermission, I got into a very lively discussion with him about "Jaws" and "E.T", and he seemed genuinely interested and amused by my opinions. At the end of the play (it wasn't very good but had 2 wonderful performances by Ms. Walters and Geraldine James), we walked out together and the 3 of us continued chatting on the sidewalk until their car arrived. Lovely people.

I was shopping in New York and ended up in a long conversation with Mike Nichols regarding wool gloves versus leather. A few weeks later, I found myself auditioning for him and he actually remembered me and said that on my advice, he'd bought the leather gloves. I didn't get the part, though.

I spent an evening with Kim Novak in Carmel when she came to see a production of "Bell, Book and Candle" I was in at a small theatre there. She regaled us with anecdotes of making the film version with James Stewart and went on to tell us about working with Preminger, Sinatra, Hitchcock, etc. Gracious, funny, touchingly vulnerable woman.

I was in the Business Class lounge many years ago at the Geneva airport when Audrey Hepburn walked in with her 2 sons. She took your breath away. So fucking elegant, classy and it was obvious she adored her kids. It was early morning, and they got breakfast from the buffet, then sat at a table next to mine and chatted away while gorging on hot chocolate and croissants. I've never seen anyone so magically beautiful in my life. One of the rare people who really lived up to her reputation. She was kind to everybody who stopped by her table and seemed to be honestly flattered that people were paying attention to her.

Sophia Loren in a hotel lobby. Tiny, beautiful, simple and sweet. Another mama who lived for her kids.

I shared a limo with Sidney Poitier once quite by accident. The definition of classy and gracious.

Someone mentioned Charles Nelson-Reilly in a posting. I worked for him in the 1980s and 1990s - best director I have ever worked for, and I've worked for a lot. Brilliant, funny, caring, insanely intelligent man. His knowledge of theatre, theatre history, literature and music was astonishing and profound. I adored him.

I've also worked and met with a lot of celebrities who were arrogant pigs, but they shall go unmentioned here!!

I wish I had been there the night Kim Novak attended the performance. I really like "Bell, Book and Candle." I believe Novak has said in interviews that her cat in the film, Pyewacket, was played by twenty-nine cats. Novak has also said that her favorite film was "Middle of the Night," although most people remember her most from "Vertigo."

You were really lucky to meet her, and hear so much about her career. It's difficult to believe that Kim Novak is eighty-one years old now.

Thoroughly enjoyed the posts so far. I travel a lot on business and have had many airport sightings of various famous folk. Some notable "brushes" with the famous have been:

- turning around quickly when shopping and elbowing Andie McDowell in the boob as she turned toward me

- riding in a hotel elevator with Dixie Carter and Hal Holbrook when a fire alarm went off and we were stranded for a few minutes (wonderful people and conversation)

- having dinner of pinto beans and corn bread with George Jones and his wife

- chatting up Danny Glover seated next to me on a late night flight into LAX (wonderfully charming)

- at a tender age of 10 and after countless hours in line, getting a hug and signed autograph by a true wonder woman, Linda Carter

- pissing at a urinal next to Jimmy Summerville, chatting about drinking too much, and ogling each other's goods

Fun memories.

Nobody with experience at a urinal with Larry Craig or George Michael? ;-)

I have to admit this thread is fun to read. My first question when meeting anyone from LA is pretty much always: "have you seen anyone famous?"

I'm famous - I'm Funguy! You can see me when you visit L.A.

On the more serious side, tho, I have had many "famous" people in my practice and they are ALL just like everyone else: some very nice, considerate, thoughtful; some flaming assholes who "demand" all of your attention because "they are 'famous'"; most are simply every day people. What has been fun, however, is when I am out to dinner, on an airplane, or wherever, and one of them says hello to ME! That's a real a real ego-boost.

Spotted Melissa Rivers & son + two assistants all in American first class cabin today from LAX to JFK. She was going to NYC to see her mother (Joan Rivers) who suffered a medical emergency at a New York hospital. Saw her in the Flagship Lounge at LAX and she was understandably upset. I hope Joan recovers!

A number of celebrities, but here are three very different experiences, involving people who were among the most famous in all three branches of the national government:

1. In the early 1960s, I saw First Lady Jackie Kennedy at Little Caledonia, a boutique shop in Georgetown. No Secret Service that I can remember; she was just shopping for high-end furniture.

2. Senator Ted Kennedy was in his enormous phase in the 1970s when I met him at an airport (not Larry Craig style). He was carrying his own luggage.

3. Back in the 1990s, I watched Antonin Scalia play squash on a number of occasions (I was an avid player but never played him), always with younger and often very cute men.

I was on business a few years ago at a resort hotel off the coast of Georgia. I went into the gym/spa facility and checked into the desk of the facility. There were towels at the check-in desk and I grabbed one. Apparently that was the only spot for obtaining towels in the facility, because after my gym work out, I was drying off after a shower and a naked wet guy was wandering around after his shower and asked me where the towels are. I looked up and there was James Taylor wet and stark naked. I told him that I would quickly dry off and put some pants on and go outside to the desk and bring him a towel. I was a really good boy and my eyes stayed horizontal. He was really appreciative and nice.

John Schneider Sighting

On a plane trip from LA to Atlanta, I saw John Schneider during his "Dukes of Hazzard" days. He was stunningly good looking, and I could not help from staring. He has aged well too.

Celebs I'd like to meet and I'm dating myself: Has anyone ever met porn actor Alec Powers? More recently, has anyone ever met Jimmy Fanz?

Main stream actors I'd love to meet: Has anyone ever met Eion Bailey, Joshua Bowman or Liam Hemsworth?

At a performance of Lena Horne on Broadway in the 80's sitting next to Jackie Kennedy with Mike Nichols and right behind Jackie was Coretta King with a companion. They greeted each other coldly.

John Stossel, going to the beach on Martha's Vineyard (West Chop, for the cognoscenti). I'd confess his real name, but that's a no-no around here.

I administered anesthesia to Peter Wolf of the J. Giels Band. My fingers were in that mouth!

These are, well, not sightings, but performances I was in:

[sir] Colin Davis with Mozart's Requiem and Handel's Messiah. A wonderful man, musician, and conductor. Good singer, too.

Leonard Bernstein doing Beethoven's Missa Solemnis. A harrowing experience. He was so nit-picking that, in four and a half hours

of rehearsals, we hadn't done the Credo.

Rostropovich [and Vishnevskeya] doing Verdi's Requiem. Known for her vibratoless voice, her high "A" was designated as "the all clear signal" by the chorus.

Michael Tilson Thomas ["Michael Tinsel Tonsils"] escaping Symphony Hall, Boston after a concert, with the Piano Soloist and he in matching capes.

Maureen Forester leaving Tanglewood for Toronto or Montreal, and asking if anyone wanted to hitch a ride with her.

I haven't thought about Alec Powers in years :) I'd love to meet both your guys but I get the feeling I couldn't keep up with Jimmy Fanz.

Not sure I understood that, "John Stossel" is not his real name?

Liam Hemsworth - when he lived in Sydney (his home town) used to run into him all over - just a decent person

Re Barbara Ccok: She put out that she quit B'way because of depression, a fight with alcohol, unhappiness with the material she was being given but the rather well substantiated rumor was that nobody could put up with her anymore and she couldn't get work. Apparently, she was impossible and not a very nice lady.

Was he as cute in person as he is on film? Not sure why I like him so much. He's not at all my type but something about him is really sexy.

I've never been a big tennis fan. In fact, McEnroe is one of maybe 3-4 names I would even recognize.

I sat next to Pat Cash's wife on a very long flight to South Africa and she thought it was so funny that I had no idea who he was. We ended up staying in the same hotel and he got a kick out of it too and invited me to lunch with them. His wife was one of the prettiest women I have ever seen - half Irish and half South American country that I can't remember.

May I use your posting to restart this fun thread?

Let's allow celebrity spouses sightings too :)

Posted

Harrison Ford - really nice but looks older in person (but, I suppose, everyone does)

Dianna Ross - a real b*tch; the "staff" was told to not make eye contact. She acted like a diva in the worst way
