I am not sure if all hotels have the same policy, but a manager trainee at the Sheraton New York told me that they have a separate bank of rooms set aside for Priceline and Hotwire etc. customers. They are smaller rooms and often are located on lower floors which are more subject to street noise. As I said I am not sure if that applies to all properties, but it is something to consider when booking through A third party. Incidentally, it is possible to get rooms at the Sheraton NY where I usually stay this time of the year for the 200 - 300 price range tax included. I have even gotten a room for about 200 including tax... and booking directly with the hotel's website. However, it depends on the day of the week... Sundays are often less... Good for me as that's the night the NYBC meets... However, come September rates skyrocket in NYC.

Remember taxes can kill you in NYC!

In my posting above I mentioned taxes included... Lots of rooms are available between 2 and 3 hiundred bananas. The catch is the rate AFTER taxes!!! In NYC there is sales tax, hotel occupancy tax, a tourism tax, a Javits fee , and a couple of others thrown in as well. I just checked a recent invoice for a 254 stay had taxes of 41 bucks bringing it to 295. Within the OP's price, but just barely! As I recall the occupancy tax alone is around thirteen percent! So much for being tourist friendly.

addendum: be sure to check AAA rates or other special rates...

I booked a room at The OUT Hotel in Hell's Kitchen for this weekend. I've never stayed there, but I got a "deluxe" king room for $239. (plus taxes) If you can hang on 'til Monday, I'll let you know what I thought about the place.

Thanks for the recommendations.

It's true that some hotels give you shitty rooms if you book through priceline, hotel.com etc. I once got a room that's so noisy I couldn't sleep the whole night. That's why now I always tell them that I'll pay extra just give me a better room. In the few times I did it, they charged me extra. And NYC hotel tax is like $100 per night. Those bastards!

I stayed at "The Pod" on 51st Street on the East Side (they now have a second location too). Tiny rooms, but very clean and very well-laid out and ultramodern. I shared a bath, but the hall bathrooms are big and clean and were always empty when I needed one. Less than $200 a night.

Good point. http://www.companyofmen.org/newreply.php?p=869189&noquote=1The 414 lists the following rates rates of $195 to $215 through the end of August and $255 to $265 through September.

All rates up to $255 come up to less than $300 with tax.

BTW, this calculator will figure out the full rate including NYC taxes if you plug in the room rate:

http://www.littleviews.com/home/newyork/tips_and_taxes.cfm#chart

(Again, I'm just listing the 414 as one option that seems good based on the reviews. I live in NY so haven't stayed there.)

The Ramada New York/Eastside in Murray Hill is often a very good value, sometimes under $200. Not a flagship hotel, but clean and decent. Lexington and 31st. A wonderful neighborhood for restaurants, and the area is FULL of lovely 20 and 30 somethings getting started in finance etc. Great eye candy.

I agree about The Pod on 51st Street. I have stayed there many times. It is exceptionally clean, with no problem ever about sharing a bathroom. I am staying in NYC on a Wednesday in October. I just did a search of hotels. The Pod on 51st Street (as opposed to the newer one relatively close to Penn Station) is the only hotel that comes in under $200 a night, including all the taxes, etc.

For most of my domestic as some international properties, I've used http://www.booking.com. I've gotten great rates and rooms through them and will be staying in two NYC properties next month and the following one.

I'm staying at the TIME HOTEL before I fly out for international travel and a property near JFK {overnight} when I return. Good hunting! Check out http://www.tripadvisor.com, http://www.hotwire.com, http://www.viator.com, and http://www.hotels.com, but from amongst these, I prefer the first one mentioned!

I was tempted to those pods even though they don't appear to be any cheaper, at least the ones I saw online. I didn't know you have to share bathroom. Major deal breaker for me.

The Pod and bathrooms: every room has four bathrooms close by, lights in your room tell you which ones are available. I have stayed at the hotel often, and never had to wait for an empty bathroom.

As for the price, The Incentra, a gay-oriented hotel in the West Village, has much nicer rooms with bathrooms at a slightly higher rate. But, there is minumum three-day stay on weekends, and you often have to make reservations far ahead for week nights. Both hotels are very well run and clean.

I have saved about $12,000 staying at the Pod and The Incentra over the past decade or so.
