I seem to remember a Miss Manners column in which she said that congratulations were not the best thing to offer on (I forget whether it was

an engagement or a wedding) as it implied conquest by one party over the other . . .

I do wish you a most heart-felt continued wonderful and happy life together!

I believe Congratulations go to the groom for being able to find a suitable partner. Best wishes go to the bride, for God knows she will need it.

I believe you avoid congratulations to the bride lest it appear that there was some doubt that she would find a partner and she is therefore being congratulated for overcoming the odds.

So after 45 years of living in sin, you've decided to take the plunge and make honest men of each other??!! Congratulations and best wishes (that should take care of all contingencies). I'm very happy for you both and wish you only the best. Honeymoon plans?? All of us nosey guys want to know. . .

We're still living in sin; it's just not the same ones.

The groom is supposed to be the one who was supposed to pursue while the bride remained passive, so he is the one to be congratulated. Of course, women have always found ways to subtly or not-so-subtly pursue, but others aren't supposed to acknowledge that.

We also congratulate people when they win a prize. :)

Charlie, heartiest felicitations and congratulations to you and the blushing groom (or are you the one blushing?). Truly joyous news!

Charlie... as per your usual self... Always the most urbane of posters... Even when in a jocular vein...

In any event, congratulations on the new sins...

Where is the honeymoon going to be? Someplace cool I would guess.

I'll never tell--I don't want the paparazzi hanging around. But it better be cooler than it is here: it was 114 on our way home from the wedding.

Let's see now - 45 years of living together in sin(s). And you guys are from India where marriages are still arranged, right? That means your both around 50 - that's a little old to be blushing. But hey, this is a thread about innocence lost and that always makes me blush too.

I imagine I'll be in the supermarket someday soon waiting for the check-out clerk to work his/her magic on my groceries (and wallet) and my eye will fall on the National Enquirer or some such august publication and there will be these two distinguished looking guys wearing skimpy bathing suits (or not . . .) in some glamorous resort (Ibiza, maybe) and I'll just know it's you and your mate - the blush will give you away!
