I've managed to survive the worst of the Seattle Winter and now that I've switched back to my light jacket, I know that the warm weather is on it's way. That means it's time to plan a move South.

I'm looking for 300-400 sf of Living/Work space somewhere in the State of Oregon. Given my druthers I'd rather be in the Portland area (Vancouver, WA counts!) but you know, when you need cheap you can't be particular.

I'm currently living in a daylight basement in two 13ft x 9ft spaces. It's tight but doable. One of the spaces is my bedroom and the other is my work area. Most of the time I eat out of a dorm room style kitchen (think small refrigerator, microwave, and about half of an upright freezer) and I serve a meal or two each week to the household from the upstairs kitchen. I have my own 3/4 bath which is just a bit of heaven!

It seems like I mostly sleep or work on the computer, However I can be tempted at almost any time to take a few hours off. My work week is Sunday through Monday in the Afternoons/Evenings. Sunday is the busy day of the week for me. I literally get up the crack of Noon and tend to go to bed in the wee hours of the morning, so if you need an overnight eye on something, I'm your Daddy.

My income from the site is variable through the year so the cheaper, the better or you need to understand that there are about two months of the year where it's problematical. The only other requirement is that I need high speed internet which I'm willing to contribute.

Good luck, Daddy. But I did get a big laugh when you said it was time to move "South" and I was envisioning palm trees and elderly people from New Jersey. Then I read the next sentence! Oregon! LOL.

I had the same reaction, but a different location in mind. I was thinking Southern California, ie, Palm Springs, Santa Barbara, or San Diego.

Let's see: as we work our way south on I-5, the forecast high for Seattle today is 50, Portland 51, Eugene 53, Medford 55. I don't see any serious improvement until we get all the way to Redding, CA, at 70. Maybe you should put that light jacket back in the closet, or re-think how far south you need to travel.

It must be because I'm from NYC that I don't think of California as "south." That always means FL to me.

I think some people didn't read Daddy's original post or stopped reading it after the second sentence.

"South" is one of the four cardinal directions and doesn't necessarily mean palm trees and white sand bitches beaches.

I'm actually taking a hard look at Phoenix, it appears to have a very healthy Gay positive environment, lower cost of living, and high tech jobs in that are my area of expertise. More on this later, I have a Doctors appointment that I have to wander off to.

You'll need to load up on lotion. It's so dry there that your skin will begin to crack after a few days ....

Nope, I read all that and still had the same reaction ... when I hear someone say "I'm planning a move South (not to the south)" I automatically think Florida. It comes from living on the East Coast.

For me, when coupled with the sentence about the cold Seattle winter (which is nothing compared to Chicago or, as Gar1eth pointed out, Winnipeg) I thought Daddy wanted to move south of where he is located and to a warmer climate. Southern California is both south of Seattle and generally warmer and drier this time of year. I consider Florida to be southeast, as it is both south and east of the Pacific coast.

Thank you for the explanation. I am reminded privately that "South" has a different connotation in the US, that a non-native speaker can't understand.

By the way, I love Phoenix too. Warm winters and hot dry summers.

Phoenix would certainly be good for you with all that sun and UV light. Wherever you end up, it is all just one more step til you can end up at your final spot: your aloha to Hawaii. Good luck Daddy.

Drier than Seattle, sure. But winter IS the rainy season in SoCal. All three days of it.

Daddy, WA is losing one of its finest if you leave. I'll be leaving WA sometime this summer as well. At the moment, we're so close! How's your truck doing? Good luck at the doctor's.

PS I quite like Phoenix, its one of the fastest developing cities in the US. Lots of great new housing and sunshine

Let me throw a downer on this:

The aquifer is limited, and mostly based on the Colorado river.

Electricity is limited, as there is hydroelectric and not much else.

Otherwise: I expect I'll be in north East Tucson (2 hrs. SE of phoenix) in the next year or two.

I've looked at most of the possible destinations on the West Coast. I've narrowed it down to Las Vegas or Phoenix. Phoenix slightly in the lead as it has more of a need to techy types. California has priced itself out of the market. As much as I would enjoy Oregon, I'd rather have the warmer climate.

I've started putting together a budget to see what it'll take to move down to that area (Only a few hours travel time between the two)
