Have wished several friends a Happy May First today, only to have them look at me like I have five eyes. Doesn't anyone know what May First is all about? Does this rhyme sound at all familiar:

Hooray Hooray

Its the First of May

Outdoor fucking begins today

Or were we just more advanced as children in Kansas than people give us credit for? So, here's to declaring the season officially open. I want pictures. Polaroids will be adequate...

EastbayGuy~~

I was about to send a "serious" reply, before I read your full posting. Thanks for the laugh.

Throughout much of Europe and other places too I think, May 1st is a celebration of socialist philsophy and the working man. The communists were big on celebrating it, and they certainly would not have been amused at the reference to "outdoor fucking." But I am!!!!

May 1, known as Labor Day, is a holiday almost all over the world. It commemorates a famous crack down on striking workers in Chicago in the early years of the 20th century (or the last of the 19th). Many of them, referred to as "The Chicago Martyrs", were killed by police...Since this happened in Chicago, the US is probably the only country in the world that does not celebrate it on the date of the infamous event and invented its very own Labor Day in September...So much for trivia... :) :)

Check out this link for the origins of the holiday.

Well if the Christians can "borrow" Saturnalia and make Christmas I suppose the labor and socialist movement can "borrow" May Day. (Man, my arms are tired by making all these "air" quotes).

If you think about it May Day is our kind of holiday. So in the spirit of the holiday "erect" a May pole or two of your own!

Happy May Day!

Driving to work today, I saw a banner hung from the Lincoln Park - North Avenue Beach footbridge over Lakeshore Drive that read, "Fire Your Boss -- May 1st - Remember Haymarket."

Usually the hangers of such banners stick around to wave to commuters, but in this case there wasn't a soul to be seen.

I thought it was the day when young virginal girls in white dreses swing around a May pole. Well, I can't do the girl thing and DEFINITELY can't do the "virginal" thng. But, hell I can sure swing around a May pole, if anyone has one.

Is this also the day of Morris Dancing? I've read about it in murder mysteries, but the only time I've every nearly seen one was the hilarious moment in Garden (part of the two plays in the same theater extravaganza House/Garden) where one man from a Morris Dancing team tries to show what it's like all by himself.
