All emails should be responded to with the upmost quickness. I understand sometimes we can't answer out phones be it we are in a setting such as maybe a part time job or with family however, That said I do return phone calls the minute I can(assuming that it was missed) same with text messages. I feel that the first time a potential client contacts you sets their mood for what kind of person you are and wether or not they would be interested in second like you. So if you respond in a timely manner, that shows that you are putting them high on your list of priority as well as shows a sense of being punctual. I return all voicemails, unless it's someone barred for no showing or timewasting me. Emails I can usually do quick too as they come through to my iPhone every 15 minutes. I will also return missed calls if I am on a call and someone is call waiting or if I was busy and they called within the last 10 mins. If I had a 2 hour appointment in and a client rang at the beginning of it and a couple of hours passed I would send an ambiguous text saying "Sorry missed your call, I'm free to speak", allowing them to opportunity to phone back when convenient.

Nobody is fully booked up, most of the time he could squeeze another appointment, and if he can't, he can just call and tell you.
