>Is it possible for someone to make it appear as if they are sending an email from your IP address...can people do that now? Did someone "use" my IP & email address to vote in this pageant?

Rick,

YES it is possible for someone to send an e-mail that "looks" like it came from you. As for the IP address, I believe that CAN be possible if you are on a dedicated line (such as DSL or cable) with an individually-assigned, static IP address.

I think it is possible for "someone" to use your IP address and e-mail info to vote. However, I don't think it's an easy thing to do. Sounds like an "inside" job to me where someone associated with the pageant is using your info to vote.

I went to their website to vote (I'm firmly support voters rights). However, after waiting almost 5 minutes for their site to load, I couldn't figure out HOW to vote (couldn't find a link to vote). I personally question if ANYONE has actually voted in this pageant.

Go to http://www.maleescortawards.com/ and click on "Nominate". That will take you to the voting window.

I beleive I can clear this up for you. First, a little tech lesson: Your IP Address at home and your email address are 2 different things. Your email address is specific to whoever is the domain (AOL, HOTMAIL, whatever comes before .com) Your home IP address is the route that packets of info take on their way to your computer.

What most likely happened here is that some voted using your email address (could be anybody). You got the email, because its what was filled in the voting form.

As far as the IP address, it doesnt matter. The IP address that was most likely logged is that of the person who used your email address, and NOT YOUR OWN IP address. Since the IP was simply stated as being logged, and was not actually included in the email, you have no way of knowing if its really yours or not. I would guess it is not.

Not to worry. Its most likely some bored person just fucking around. Do you remeber when we all used to use pagers, and people would page all the escorts using each others phone numbers, so we would all call each other? How annoying was that?

BTW, if you want to test this theory, go and try to vote form your computer. Use a different email address to vote. If it accepts your vote, that means that your IP address was never used to vote before, therefore, whoever did this other vote was just using your email address from their own computer.

Barry, thanks for the info. I "assumed" that the "Nominate" link really meant nominate. Since that was previously done, I didn't think to look there to vote.

Hope it doesn't take another 5 minutes to load this time. :+

Now that you & Hole4Hire & a few others (by email) have explained it to me & shown me just how computer illiterate I didn't realize I was, yes, this is probably what went down ("went down"? Where did that come from?). I could have figured it out myself if I'd given it some thought. Really! Well, I could have. :p

Damn, I've only been doing this for 3 years...well into the age of cell phones. First Studio 54 & now this...I'm always born too late for all the fun. :p

Just did it. I even typed in the same email address & it went through...which means you're right and it is only sensitive to IP addresses. Someone just used my email info at their computer. Bastards! (just kidding)

The Meaning Of Life

>Rick,

Subliminally speaking, it is an unstated desire.

He just wants to hear me whisper the instruction manual to his new television set in Spanish while he rolls his head back and forth and says, "si, papi, that's it, yeah" over and over and over again....

I thought the same thing but stumbling around I found it there.

Looks like someone is looking out for Franco.

And if you want to know your own IP address, go to:

No, really.

Ummmm ... yes and no.

Nobody outside your computer can actually know your IP address. All they know is the IP address you're projecting. If you're behind a firewall using NAT, the only address that will be detected is the firewall's address.

Most broadband customers will fall into that category.

What's interesting to me is that Rick went and voted again with the same email address. They're saying they're checking for dupes, but they're not really doing it. Not the shiniest spoons in the drawer.

OK, this is bizarre. I have no idea what to make of the following email I received yesterday from Joey of "The Male Escort Awards". The subject is "Your vote has been recorded.":

[font size=2

]Thank You rick,

We have recorded all of your votes including Franco Di Santis for the Best Escort of 2003!

Your IP Address (deleted) has been noted so you can no longer place a

valid vote.

The Male Escort Award winners will be announced May 17th, 2003 at the San Vincente Inn at the Escort Pool Party and BBQ. 1-5pm and admission is 10.00.

Thanks Again - http://www.maleescortawards.com [/font]

HUH? I didn't vote for anyone at all. If it weren't for the thread in the Deli, I wouldn't have even known about the contest. Is it possible for someone to make it appear as if they are sending an email from your IP address...can people do that now? Did someone "use" my IP & email address to vote in this pageant?

I should add that I am not suggesting anything improper on Franco's part, or on Joey & Carlo's part. And I really don't care who the winners end up to be. I'm not saying that I wouldn't have voted for Franco if I had actually voted, but I don't place much importance on popularity contests (even if I'm the winner). I do, however, have a problem with my identity being stolen, or borrowed, or whatever you call it.

Anyway, I wrote back to Joey & Carlo but haven't received any explanation (yet?). I wonder if anyone else has received a similar email.

Well this just does it for me guys. I am going to deduct one point from the respect and esteem that I have for the joey and carlo awards!}(

Yes, he does - but a little cheating on an escort contest is going to leave him FAR SHORT of what he really needs.
