To Purge or Not to Purge: That is the Question!!

For almost two years now, I have been a member of this magnificent board. When I first came here, I would read the innumerable and varied responses. After a month or two or perhaps three or more-- I decided to post and respond. Well, during the time of my reading-- I noticed a few writers just desparaged, demeaned, moaned and groaned: they downright bitched and bitched in "The Forum" in particular. They have since been purged or banned from this site.

Currently, my problem is NOT with any cyberfriends in this forum; the situation occurs in "South of the Border"-- south of Central America escorts' section. One respondent must have an unbearble life, for he has forever spilt venom since he has begun to write which has been over eight months now. I know the time, for before my trip to Brazil last October, he would write the most scathing remarks and attacks about another respondent of whom he is acutely envious, or must I say jealous. Everytime that my cyberfriend (a person who has the most esteemed respect from almost everyone else here) writes, this mofo...the self-hater messes up the thread with his vile sarcasm and attacks. Because I admire my cyberfriend's wisdom and suggestions, the attacker has unnecessarily come at me on more than one occasion. In my attempt at not defiling another cyberbuddy's thread, I've skipped over or read and not responded. But right now, I wonder if I should succumb to this misguided man's mental illness and write salicious comments about him, or should I request that he be banned from this board all together. His blasphemy has tainted and poisoned many an individual's thread.

I profess NOT TO WANT TO CENSOR anyone, for I went through a grave issue of censorship at my professional site and survived rather victoriously. But here? Do we need to be subjected by this idiocy continuously? Do I continue to ignore (as others and I have done previously), or should I encourage my Brazilian to go through with his exposing thisTwit who continues to mar the threads and the forum with his completely unnecessary vandalism? HELP! HELP, please!

I'm pretty sure I know who you are referring to. But as long as he doesn't violate the terms of this message board, he (like everyone else) is entitled to say what he wants. And you also have to realize that there is an extraordinarily diverse group of people on this board. SOMEONE is always going to be offended at some point.

I think you should just ignore him. Responding to him (with this thread too) just brings him the satisfaction he seeks.

But if someone is truly making the board an unpleasant place, then I think the best approach is to ask Hooboy (and send suggestions) to review the rules of this board that could result in additional rule(s) that would prevent the offending poster (and others like him) from hurting the board. But to simply selectively target a poster for removal because we don't like what he posts is not the right course. IMHO. :7

With the exception of "The Lounge," the other boards on this site are primarily for information exchange. That's why people come to look at this site. The poster in question just sullies informational threads with toxic little personal attacks (none of which have even been clever or funny). Not a single posting of his that I can recall has added an iota of useful information about the topic being discussed.

Although M4M is free, it's also a commercial site. Allowing the site to be hijacked by posters like the toxic one drives viewers and content contributors away, which is certainly not the way to gain more advertising revenue! As I've said before, it's Hoo's site and he's free to do whatever he wants with it. If it were mine, the toxic one would be gone because there's no value added from his postings. In fact, his postings detract value! The same was true of Auntie Semitic, who seems to have been 86'ed (or maybe the Elders of Zion finally took care of some business?) and I'd say the toxic one has earned the same privilege. It's time to say sayonara to this chump!

Posting Guideline #1: Focus on the situation, issue or behavior, not the person.

The poster in question violates the guideline nearly every day by his personal attacks. The problem is that the attacks are directed toward the person who posts the most, and is seemingly most knowing, about Brazil. I like and respect the Brazilian expert very much. But, one of the drawbacks of being so visible and knowledgeable is attracting people who resents all the attention the expert receives.

A week ago I would have said: don't ban him, but it's so pleasant here without ad rian that I am tempted to change my mind. People like FFF, ad rian and IM Moore thrive on attention, but the poster on the

South American site seems to thrive on making stupid postings!

I agree, we all know who is being referred to here. Never posts anything but nasty remarks full of mostly dribble. To me these kinds of posters, and every site has them, are just seeking attention and trying to see how many people they can rile up enough to get a response from. Even though you know you shouldn't and try hard as hell not to, sometimes you aren't in the greatest mood and that leads into posting a response.

I agree with Lucky that ad rian is still here, and I think I know what his new id is by the posts I've read, but I do stress "think" not "know". Anyway, I always thought ad rian was more aligned than was warranted, as he did state some good points and provided some good information on some topics. I always thought he was someone who just loved to argue/debate and if necessary would make outlandish statements just to keep the debate going.

As I've expressed before, I think this board would be a lot less interesting without FFF. He can post some ROFLMAO threads and I can't remember him being nasty with any other poster, except for a couple, who if I remember correctly, usually attacked him first. I think they just like to "egg" each other on. I know he likes to rile the escorts up, so I guess they might not care for him. But IMO he helps put things in perspective and brings a jolt of reality to a mostly fantasy world. At least, IMO his threads are never boring and mundane.

Looks like action is being taken when certain posters try to hijack a thread. I'm personally glad to see the action. I often travel and don't always have high-speed access to this site. It's been real frustrating to have to wade through the s$%t in order to read the wonderful info contained on this site.

Thanks for bringing up the guideline! ;)

I personally find the "censorship" argument a bit weak for a site like this. This is a privately run website. Even if the hosts here decided to delete certain types of posts, that doesn't prevent anyone from creating their own website to post what isn't allowed here.

I personally would find this site MORE interesting if it were heavily moderated. We all know that a small percentage of people who visit this place actually post on the message center. Maybe if the "noise" of posters who seemingly come here just to attack others or provoke arguments were removed, some other interesting voices might emerge.

I am glad that I found a forum (related to another interest of mine) that is, in fact, heavily moderated. People are allowed to express all kinds of opinions on the subject at hand. What isn't allowed is personal attacks. There are far too many of those here.

Anyone who still feels compelled to invoke the 1st Amendment should read the posts on AOL in response to many of their polls. Many, many people post comments only to call people names or proclaim that anyone who doesn't agree with them is wrong. Is that an interesting dialogue? Not to me.

The relative anonymity of the 'Net encourages those inclined to engage in uncivilized behavior to "let it all hang out." I'm sure some people act with the same aggression in their face to face interactions. My guess is that many people who have no problem acting boorish online attempt to be more socially appropriate when they are out in the real world.

I am relatively new here, but here are my thoughts. I agree that freedom of speech is not the issue. This is a private site. Let the owners do what they want with it. (I do however take the point that the content here comes from those who post so the case for editing is not as great as it might otherwise be.) I do think though that the strength of a site like this is the honest exchange of ideas, even ones that sometimes may appear to be shocking or which may make ome uncomfortable. Everytime this issue comes up, I find that those who scream the loudest about personal attacks are amongst the finest practitioners of the art. It really is all quite relative. Some people find some political posts boorish, but some others find other non-political posts boorish. I still think personal selection, is the best approach rather than self-censorship or "censorship by moderation".
