Who would have thought that I'd come across a Joan Didion thread while scrolling through the topics on Hooboy this morning! Yes, she hit the 2002 nail on the head in that NYReview piece, as she (almost) always does. Joan Didion uses words the way marksmen use bullets: efficiently, accurately, and dead on-target. I still think her essay on the Reagan governor's mansion in California is one of the great pieces of journalistic literature ever written. As for Andrew Sullivan, he used to be a major hero of mine; but I don't know what's gotten into him lately. Maybe his medication.
