Greetings Guys~

It was brought to my attention this evening that a profile bearing my picture and email address was posted on this site...

Confusion and Anger would be the two adjectives to best describe my reaction. Fortunately, i kept my cool and emailed the webmaster of that site: I simply asked to have my image, etc taken down due to it being fraduently posted. Maybe i was too nice, but then again, it wasn't the webmaster's fault...

My question regarding this whole thing is: How can it be so easy for a total stranger to post something like this? Wouldn't you think that a site like this would have some sort of confirmation or validation process, much like when submitting a review here?

I suppose i'm just asking WHY. I also didn't want to sit on this, as i am sure that many many people have seen this profile and it kills me to think that people assume something totally bogus.

Sometimes, especially in this business, reputation is all you've got to stand on... I just wanted to set the record straight about where i stand. I'm not a barebacker.

Thanks guys.

Warmest Regards,

You're not the first guy this has happened to, and you won't be the last.

There's a long history with that site. One guy who showed up there (with someone else's phone number) was utterly STRICKEN. He wrote the webmaster, who requested additional photos as proof of identity. The offending profile was removed, and two days later a new one went up (with the same bogus phone number) USING THE NEWLY PROVIDED PICTURES!

How can this happen? A webmaster with no scruples. That's how.

As for using your pictures, any pornstar will tell you it happens all the time. There's a guy claiming to be in NY who has a canadian e-mail address using 15-year-old pictures of pornstar Karl Thomas and claiming it's HIM today. The only way to really control where your pictures will be used is not to let them out. x(

As someone who works in the computer industry, I can tell you that there is very little protection against an invasion of your privacy after you access the internet. Anyone with computer savvy can find out everything about you, based on just your emails alone. Once they attain your social security number (ridiculously easy to do) they can wreak real havoc on not only your personal information, but they also can gain access your financial information and steal your credit identity. This is why you should never order anything over the net using your credit card, unless there is some kind of security screening from the seller. If your credit identity gets stolen it can take several years to get it legally staightened out and you will be financially liable for all charges, interests and penalities until, if ever, it is finally straightened out. Needless to say, once they have your basic personal information it would be easy to pass any verification process, especially one as easy as the one on this sight. If you do not already have a firewall for your pc, you should call your internet service provider to see what they can offer, but most times it is better just to go out and purchase and install your own. Good luck and I hope this helps answer you questions. If you have other questions or I can help you with this in any way, just let me know, and I will try to find you the best advice available.

A massive thanks~

I appreciate the both of you chiming in supportively, as i thought at least one person would attack me on this sensitive subject... I guess i'm getting pessimistic in my old age ;)

It's really frightening how easy it is to mess with someone's life through the internet. This is the first time i've ever had to deal with something like this and i'm sure it won't be the last~ i'm just amazed that the webmaster of that site doesn't do more to curb this kind of abuse. Does he happen to get a stipend for every new member who signs up? I'm guesing it's about money, but i'm not sure how... Anyone care to explain?

As for fellow San Antonian Karl Thomas, i'm sure people abuse his image copyright frequently considering i've seen them on the internet quite a bit. It's just sad that people do these things...

Can't people just take some kindergarden advice and 'look, but don't touch?'

Warmest Regards,

VaHawk,

EXCELLENT advice.

Here is a great link for a free firewall that works quite well:

http://www.zonelabs.com/

It also goes without saying one needs an Anit-Virus running at all times. Here is a link to a great free Anit-Virus program:

I just checked out that link & I have some questions. How good is the free version of Zone Alarm? Is it enough? The pay version, which won the 2002 PC World award for Best Firewall, is $49.95 for a year. What's the difference between the free & pay version?

Also...I am paying for McAfee VirusScan online...should I drop that & use the free anti-virus you mentioned above? Isn't McAfee supposed to be the best anti-virus system?

Firewalls won't help protect against imposters!

If there are any photos of you on the web, or ones that you've emailed to somebody, there is no way to prevent an unscrupulous person from posting those photos on a site like Bareback City or for that matter in a Yahoo or Aol profile.

Anybody with any browser can save an .jpg to their local disk.

All you can do is complain about it afterwards.

I believe there is software to digitally "sign" photos; (and I have the impression that the photos on gaymuscle.org are signed in that fashion), so it is possible to prove that the photos *were* stolen, but again, that's an after the fact thing.

The difference between the pay version and the free version is that the pay version gives you a lot of detail on who is trying to get into your computer. Since Zone Alarm does a great job of protecting your computer you have no reason to see the specifics as most of the attempts to get into your computer is random Internet traffic. I sampled the pay version and I found myself tracking down computers via their IP addresses left on my computer. The Zone Alarm pay version tells you who and where and the free version just gives you the IP address. Trust me in that all you and I need is the free version. The FBI, The White House and Anna Nicole Smith need the pay versions.

The only reason why they seem to be the best is because McAfee pays big bucks to be pre-loaded on store bought computers. The free version I am speaking of is just fine as long as you update the data base from time to time (which you would have to do with McAfee anyway).

Happy and safe computing! Let me know if you need further help.

No, if he's using VirusScan Online it auto-updates every time a new virus creeps its way onto the internet. With the speed these buggers spread these days, it's worth the comfort level of having that auto-update going on. I've been using it for a year or so and have NO complaints. (Unlike Microsoft's auto-update, this one works.)

For firewalls, I'll agree on the free version of ZoneAlarm. Just make sure you're not putting a firewall behind your existing ISP's firewall. ;-) Or most DSL routers have firmware firewalls built in. Mine does, and it has passed every test Steve Gibson's grc.com has thrown at it.

And of course, there's a certain comfort in "one vendor" if you're using one or more MacAffee products. I'm also using their SpamKiller which integrates well with VirusScan Online so the pesky e-mail viruses never get into my inbox in the first place. :-)

Does this work with the Mac OS, particularly X, since I am using both a desk top with OS 8.6 and my lap top has X?

RE: Non-refundable Fees

I do not know if it works with MAC or not. It has to say somewhere on the site if it works with MAC or not. However, since it is a free download give it a whirl.

Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you, but it is best that you got a firewall. McAfees is one of the absolute, if not the best available. If firewalls were automobiles it would be in the BMW/Mercedes category. It might help if you think of the cost this way: if you do the arithmetic, the average escort charges $200 an hour, so $40 equates to 1/5 of an hour or only 12 minutes of sucking cock! ;-) ;-) I can't really comment on the free stuff, as I've never used it, but as the old saying goes "you get what you pay for".

All these free downloads take money out us computer guys' pockets, just like all the free music downloads and movie downloads deprive entertainers of income. LOL when are they going to come up with a site where I can download all you hot escorts for free?? }> :p

Seriously though, if your isp is thru a cable company, remember that you are connected to the net 24 hours a day, even if your pc is turned off. As an added step of safety, I would advise you to copy any personal files you have stored on your c drive (especially financial records) to an external storage device (dvd, cd, floppy) and keep one copy or more for easy home access and store a copy in a secure location such as a safety deposit box. This way you can delete them from you c drive as an added precaution against outside invaders.
