I often check the "what's going on" section at the bottom of the page, and I am always amazed by the small number of members who are posting in contrast to the large number of guys who apparently are just "observers". Since it doesn't cost anything to register with Daddy, and it is certainly much easier to follow the threads, etc. I'd be curious to know from Daddy or any of the moderators, or indeed any of my fellow posters as to the reason for this huge difference. Thanks in advance.

My theory is that it's traffic going to DaddysReviews that happen to hit the Forum tab to see what it is. They might not have any continued interest after that.

I visited the forum group on and off for a couple of months before I had the need to post.

It's common in all online venues, going all the way back to the earliest days. The first time two computers communicated, one guy typed and 15 watched.

A lot more people just watch the proceedings rather than participate. They are affectionately known, on the nerd net, as "lurkers". By far the largest population on any online venue is the lurkers.

Attempts have been made over the years to convince (and in some cases even bribe) lurkers to "come out" and join in the festivities but they all have good reason for being lurkers in the first place and any attempt to goad them into participation only a) pisses them off or b) scares them away.

They'll come in when they want. Sometimes it goes this way:

Other times, they just want to join in the fun, and some won't ever come in.

That's life online.

One good friend I met through this forum hardly ever posted anything. He told me he felt intimidated to participate in writing, although he was a very sociable man in person.

I think His Grace, Duke Glutes may be onto something (I guess you don't make it to the exalted title of Duke without acquiring a geat deal of wisdom along the way :) ). I wonder how many of those "lurkers" are us? How many times have you just wanted to see what was going on without jumping in? I know I have. Might they be from some people who used to post but don't now for various and sundry reasons.

I bet there are a number of people who probably don't want to register for a site focused on this topic either because they are not out, have some sort of shame about being on a site like this or even any gay related site. It's only recently that I realized how many people test the waters of a gay sex experience or coming out with escorts.

Interesting. I never bother to log-out, so i don't have to log-in.

According to the stats, there are 570 'active members', but the number of people who post is much less than that, I think. So there is still a huge gap between posters and readers - which is not surprising, for all the reasons previosuly stated.

Some come here to socialize, and some come just to learn or be entertained.

You're right: there are many reasons as to why people visit this Board. Through the years I've met many "lurkers" who venture around. I'll put them in the category of those who hire but don't feel the need to post on this Board. Next to them there's another group of those who hire regularly and never write reviews.

I visit this forum quite regularly. However, I do not log in unless I feel I have something to contribute to a discussion. The fact that I am usually lurking around as a guest is not an indication that I don't care.

This is true for other forums for which I am a member - computer, automotive, travel, etc.

And I never stay logged in - in fact I always empty cookies and private information when I close my browser if I have visited this site - guess I'm paranoid.

Thanks for all the great comments and observations. For those of you who are lurkers and read this thread, maybe you can log in and add your comments too. We welcome new posters and active participants !!

Nice topic, thanks Diverdan.

1. I liked Deej's replay, he is right and said it well.

2. Steven has an interesting point of view as an escort, one of the premier escorts (in my mind)

3. Glutes - :) Like me, I log in when feel inside to say something, or see an interesting topic.

4. bess.toad - yes, many of these lurkers are us.

5. Search engines index forum, this is reflected in consumer demand in the network and so many come to the forum. Some of them are accidental, it is not their forum, but human curiosity is stronger than diarrhea.

So guests are more members.

And don't wonder guys, I've started learning seo.

I never log in when I am just quickly scanning whatever is the "latest". Why should I? If I have a reply or wish to start a new thread, obviously I have to log in. Perhaps it is just my "MO" of surviving around the globe, meaning it is harder to "hit" a moving target. :)

Best regards,

I used to be a lurker because I was somewhat intimidated because everyone seemed so into it, in tune with each, aware of what was going on etc etc. But it is so much easier to look at the Gallery when you are logged in. You go straight through them. The threads got very interesting and then I got involved with the DC Luncheon and just have come out of my shell. Plus I have always wanted to be a Duke - if only a Nobel (Grace) Duke and not a Royal (Your Highness) Duke. Such is my lot in life.

The queen is most likely a bitch, er, I mean witch.

Yes, Steven, there may be plenty of hocus pocus here, but it ain't nothin' compared to the voodoo they brew over at MER. Oh well, can one ever expect to find truth anywhere on the internet?

Had I personally known that Jesus Christ [Rockhard] was going to appear here to deliver his message upon high - I would have shaved and probably dusted a few wooden tables tops before his arrival.

I'm just so uninformed in my life when queens arrive.

Perhaps there's an app for this?

The comments by seeker630 and glutes made me wonder: how many readers stay logged-in all the time? I do.

Charlie -- I guess you and others may not actually log out, but you also don't show up on the "Who's online" roster all the time either. I'm here very early in the morning (this sleep thing is highly overrated :) ). Most nights there are rarely more than a couple of people showing as online. This momrning it was one other guy. Right now, neither you, seeker nor glutes are showing up as onliine. So I guess the technical question is how does the system define as "online"? If you close your browser does that knock you offline? Don't know the answer to that. Deej?

I don't log out either but I think if there is no activity for a certain period of time you are automatically logged-off.

Perhaps the checked "remember me" box logs one back in automatically when one comes to the site.

Maintaining session state is an "expensive" thing for a web server so they all have timeouts. After a certain amount of inactivity, you're logged out automatically.

A lot of users here tick the "Remember Me" box at login. That doesn't keep you always logged in, rather it logs you in transparently on your next visit.

Also note that users can opt out of the "who's on line" list in the User CP.

I may be a little off topic but I think all the reasons for logging on or off that have been mentioned are right at times for all. I think people check in, from lurkers to posters, because this unique community reminds us that we connect to each other, we belong. Sorry if this is a little off the original question.
