Thanks for sharing. I am very sorry to read things like this, but unfortunately it happens way too often, and not even associated with such events as Pink Saturday or other gay pride happenings. Unfortunately progress in civil rights has always been marked by such awful events, and one wonders what was going through the mind of this man to shoot total strangers for no apparent motive. Pink Saturday is an excellent opportunity for lesbians to gather before the big parade on Sunday for the whole of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Communities. Just as many whackos come to the larger parade, there are several who come to Pink Saturday. Sadly enough, more security is needed, especially for Pink Saturday. The sheer numbers in the larger parade make it harder for those who want to cause trouble.

There are a lot of young kids who do not understand lesbianism, nor do they know how to handle a situation where many women are topless.

Security must keep these guys away, or the event itself must be in a more protected setting. In the long run education will help, but there will always be some nuts who can't handle independent women.

Last year, I recall being patted down when I entered Pink Saturday. That said, I agree that there was insufficient security. I think San Francisco could take a lesson or two from Chicago, where they host events that draw up to a million people with very few problems. During the Pride parade and the festival afterward in Lincoln Park there are plenty of police and security officers. I have to say that I saw few of them during Pink Saturday.

 

On the other hand, I was impressed with the way San Francisco cleaned up Market Street after the parade. When I returned to my hotel a few hours after the parade you would never have known that a large event had occurred.

Pink saturday is actually a fundraiser for the sisters of perpetual indulgence and many other non profits it is hosted by the sisters and raises money for non profits in the gay community.

It does happen to coincide with the annual dyke march which happens around 4pm from Delores park and ends up in the Castro.

the Castro is closed off and donation gates are put in place. no one is turned away for not paying the suggested donation unlike other cities where it is a paid for event with ticket sales etc.

 

as in Halloween in years past many folks come from all over the world but often hundreds of revelers from Oakland and other nearby cities cross the bridge and bring there gang affiliation and bad behavior with them and all hell breaks loose.

walking through the Castro last night was really sad to see thugs pushing people out of the way and acting like they are on the jerry springer show.

the local community that really supports this event were scarce a few an far between. frustrating to say the least to have a local event swarmed on by so many people that only want to cause trouble.

Fortunately the gun man was caught and arrested right away

At least it seems to be a crime of a personal nature. Not that it makes it easier, but a hate crime in the castro would just make it feel worse.

It seems a bit of a reach to suggest that Pink Saturday will cease to exist because of one incident. As the facts are coming out, the shooting was a personal feud and did not relate to Pink Saturday other than that it occurred at the same time. Castro Halloween suffered years of increasing intrusions before it had to give up. So let's not write off Pink Saturday yet. More security would be helpful in any case. Especially now that the Roberts Court has ruled that localities cannot ban guns.

Now calm down everyone. My local read is that these were some opportunistic gangbangers that had it out for each other, possibly because they were not from the same 'Hood. Give SFPD time to figure it out, and how security can be improved next year.

Not to put blame on anyone, but thats the thing about these events. Sounds like South Beach....bunch of idiots in a crowd start shooting. Its one reason why I'm loosing the will to attend such events. Too many idiots like to ruin shit and create drama.

 

Hopefully they wont get conservative and cancel it over 1 idiot.
