Quick Q: anybody have first hand, hands on experience/knowledge with Verizon's Motorola Droid? Time for an upgrade & curious about the Droid.

Thanks for the feedback gents!

one of my friends has a Droid and he seems to really like it. I guess the battery life isn't great but that seems to be the case with all of these smartphones. I have a Nexus One that I really like. I didn't want the extra bulk of a keyboard. There's supposed to be a Verizon version of the Nexus One out soon.

The Droid is a awesome device however the Incredible will be better. I guess the biggest complaint that I have and others with the Droid is the side out keyboard ... it is just not comfortable to type on.

A few specs on the HTC Incredible: The capacitive 3.7 touch screen is nice and roomy while under the hood the Incredible will sport 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, 8GB internal memory, and running Android 2.1os.

The device is rumored to be launching in two weeks on Verizon and for an upgrade the cost might be $199.00.

Both the Droid and HTC Incredible are amazing Android phones ... the biggest difference for the customer experience is physical keyboard or virtual keyboard? Keep in mind that since Android is open source you can easily change your virtual keyboard style ... there are several in the Android market.

I like to see someone do that with their iPhone :p

Anyway good choice to go Android :D

------shameless plug my tiny android blog http://www.todaysandroid.com

just the headline none of the filler.

No need. Apple got it right the first time. :p

Andrew I have the Motorola Droid and absolutely love it. The availability of the full keyboard is great. And I like the video keyboard better than the HTC. That said. I loved my iPhone but I live where atnt is spotty at best so.... Romann has played with my Droid and perhaps ill let davidsf next week when he comes to NY. So you can ask your fellow escorts of the year about it.

But seriously if you have any questions feel free to pm me

Yes well im certain romann's Droid play and David's will be quite different. So Andrew can get a true understanding of its versatility. Wow this Motorola is really getting heated up

I agree the Nexus One is an awesome device. The Incredible that I mentioned is basicaly the Nexus One with HTC Sense UI and more on board memory if the leaked specs are correct.

On battery life all Android phones are really weak. There are a few things you can do to improve this issue.

- Turn Wifi off

- Turn GPS off

- Use a Task Killer Program

Wifi and GPS are constantly searching in the background. This can be draining on your battery. Most people do not use either on a full time basis so turn them off and on as needed.

In the market there are many task killer apps. I use one called Advance Task Killer which is free. To be very basic Android does not close any programs or apps. They are always running in the background. If you exit the browser it is still open, ... the device OS is set to close programs only after it reaches X and X comes way too late for battery life.

Advance task killer or any of these apps allows you to kill open programs with one touch. The concept is like the old Windows Mobile task manager that allowed users to close programs running in the background.

I hope this might help.

Haha actually good point. I have to acknowledge that the iPhone virtual keyboard is the best I have ever used.

The HTC Sense keyboard is a very close runner up while the Android keyboard offers a so so experience.

This is an area, to be fair, where NO smartphone is outstanding.

There is a huge marketplace of 3rd-party products for augmenting battery power for iPhone and I presume the same does or will exist for other phones.

The amazing thing is I can generally get two days out of a standard iPhone charge while reading/replying to email, surfing the web, etc., and my laptop STILL only gets 4-5 hours doing the same.

We're in a technology space warp with battery life right now.

Tanks a battalion!

Sorry for the delay in responding to everyone's ass-istance ;) Had some 'puter issues and had to take 'er in to da' shop for some undercarriage work. All better now!

Thanks for the heads up on the Incredible, ryan2552. Verizon 'officially' announced it's arrival on April 29th. http://news.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474978183625 I'm going to hold out till then for it rather than the Droid. It sounds amazing.

While an iPhone would be nice, unfortunately AT&T gets almost no reception where I live, not to mention the vast majority of family and friends with whom I correspond are on the Verizon network; which translates to very few minutes actually used outside their network. And I think Verizon has great customer service and coverage around the globe. Getting a phone to use while I was in Italy for two weeks cost a whopping $14 and only .99/minute!

Thanks for your unique perspective on your Droid, NYTomcat, and for sharing the fun Romann had playing with said Droid, but where's the photos/vid of said play session! :)

Thanks gents for all the feedback! Much appreciated!!

Must be popular...

I went in to get some hands on/face time, one on one with the Incredible a couple days after it went on sale, April 29th. I liked it, but still was hesitant. Not sure if I would miss the hard keyboard on my Crackberry. After reading more about it and another visit, I decided to pull the trigger and buy, with the assurance from Verizon if I didn't like it, I could return it in 30 days. That was on Monday in Indiana. No go, sold out till June. Was told my best bet would be to try and pick one up in San Diego when I got back home. Tried that today. No go. Sold out also till end of June. Seems the thing sold out in one day across the country. Just ordered one online, due to ship on June 1st. Just hoping it arrives before I depart for the Lifecycle Ride!!

I let you know & how it I like it...or not. Thanks again for the feedback. Much appreciated!! Anybody, btw, know of anyone who got their hands on one?

It sounds like you are sold on the Droid, but if you feel like jumping to another carrier I highly recommend the Samsung Moment through Sprint. It has a slider keyboard and is an Android phone. Nice screen, battery life isn't great, but I can say that for every smartphone I've owned except for the Blackberry.

Thanks for the info, rvwnsd. I'm really interested in staying on Verizon's network because of their coverage, customer service, & most of my family and friends as well as a surprising number of guys from this community are Verizon customers so I use very few out of network minutes each month. I ordered the Incredible and according to my order status it should arrive on Monday or Tuesday!
