Hi all.

I am planning my first trip to Brazil and I have some neophyte's questions. Hopefully some of you can help me with some answers! :-) I am planning to visit Rio and Sao Paulo, probably for a week each. I am particularly interested in the sauna boy scene (naturally), but also I love sun and beaches and I hate rain, so here goes:

* What time(s) of the year are the best for what I am looking for?

* What hotel(s) in both locales would you recommend?

* If I decided to arrange for a guide in either locale to help me with sight-seeing (or possibly including helping "negotiate" with and "screen" sauna boys - I speak no Portuguese), any recommendations? Cost?

* What's the current sauna scene in both places? Where should I start?

* What are the current sauna rates - admission, refreshments, a cabine, a programme, etc.?

* I have a bit of voyeur in me. What are the odds of getting 2 hot as hell sauna boys to put on a top/bttm show for me?

* What else should I know? What have I forgotten to ask?

I'd really appreciate any comments!! Thanks!!

Darrell

Darrell, with respect, I suggest that you read the FAQs so carefully prepared by our Brazil expert, trilingual. Then I suggest you, at your leisure, peruse the archives of the forum, where you will find many of your questions answered. Once you have that background, you can approach your trip with a new eye, and since many of your questions will already be answered, we can all join in your preparations with the vicarious pleasure we get from watching someone new discover the joy of Brazil without feeling like we are re-inventing the wheel. It's a real thrill.

If you want to spend hours of your time looking for answers to your questions then take the advice of the previous poster. Even if you research this site and you think you have answers to your questions, much of the information on this site is outdated.

I want to be helpful and direct you to another site that you will find responsive to your request for information. The web address is:

http://www.gaytravelbrazil.com/bboard/topics_active.cfm

In order to access the type of material/information you want, you will have to register at the site which is an easy process.

You will not be dismissed at that site as most posters are congenial and want to share their knowledge of Brazil.

Good luck on getting your questions answered and have a nice trip.

Thanks IMRTHR> :-) Not sure what made the other responder choose to make me feel like an ignorant newbie, I apologize. I am looking for info.

Now, does anyone have any info about current $$ at Brazil saunas? The gay travel site seems sorta lean in that regard.

Don't pay the other poster any mind as he often is condescending to posters like he was with you.

I did not know that you had to pay to register at the other site. When I registered several years ago, it did not cost anything.

It would be helpful to know the approximate month you plan to visit Brazil. The weather can be oppressive during the summer in Brazil and it can get a bit cool in Brazil's winter. Remember, the seasons in Brazil are opposite of what they are in the U.S.

Most hotels have air conditioning to ease the heat but most hotels do not have heaters in the rooms.

You wrote that you plan to visit both Rio and Sao Paulo. No doubt, you know that those cities are quite different. Rio is more “lay back” so to speak while Sao Paulo is Brazil’s business area.

In addition to the saunas, there are many things to do in Sao Paulo during the day or evening. One interesting fact is that Sao Paulo has more than 80 museums and frequent concerts throughout the city. I spend a lot of time in Sao Paulo and visit Rio and other cities in Brazil only occasionally.

As to prices at saunas: The price you pay is influenced by your negotiating skills. In Rio and Sao Paulo the starting rate is usually R$50 (local money). I am aware that the guys in the Rio sauna Clube 117 want more than R$50 but will usually agree to R$60 - R$80 or R$50 if you refuse to pay more. The other popular sauna in Rio (Meio Mundo) the guys are happy with R$50.

In Sao Paulo the guys at Lagoa sauna ask for R$60 - 80 but some will negotiate with you and agree to less. At the other popular sauna in Sao Paulo (Fragata) the guys will agree to R$50.

If and when you know the approximate month you plan to visit Brazil, post the date here. I will watch for your post and will furnish more information to you.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again so much.

I have the flexibility to visit any time of the year. I just want to be able to visit beaches and avoid rain if possible and neither swelter nor freeze. So I am open to your suggestions - I trust them more than my local travel agent - LOL.

Also, about sauna boys bottoming. I've read here that most will not bttm, and I've also read that most will if their "colleagues" don't know about it. What advice can you offer? Is it all a matter of cash?

If you want beaches, Rio should be your choice because you can find a beach within easy distance of most hotels. Sao Paulo also has beaches but they are more than one hour away by car and one and one/half hour by bus. The beaches in Rio are warmer for more months during the year. Remember that it is still summer in Brazil. The beaches in Rio will be warm for at least a couple more months and will continue to attract a lot of bathers. The beaches near Sao Paulo will become cool very soon and you might find yourself alone on the beach because of the cooler weather.

Speaking of weather, for reasons I do not understand, Brazilians seem to be bothered by minor weather cooling. If the temperature drops to 75 degrees or so, the Brazilians I met (and I have met many) complain about the cold.

As to what the guys in the sauna will do, I agree with you in that its about cash and not letting their friends know what they do.

One thing is certain, it would be very difficult for you not to enjoy yourself if you took a trip to Brazil.

You did not indicate the type of hotel you seek. A choice of hotel is a critical part of enjoying your stay in Brazil. If you have a particular hotel in mind, post it here and I will let you know if I am aware of it or can comment on it.

Good luck

Looks like you two make a great pair. imrthr has been to Brazil many times, and has made quite an impression on the other Hoovilleans that he has met there.

My suggestions were based on my own desire to research a lot before I take a trip. Reading the archives and seeing how others planned their trips would be fun for me. If it seems like work for you, then by all means skip it.

I'd strongly recommend you reconsider joining http://www.gaytravelbrazil.com For the past few years it's really been the main forum online for discussing gay travel there involving escorts. If you really object to paying the minimal fee (which gets applied to any travel you book through GTB) you should note that most of the site is free -- the only pay feature is the Hot Zone forum. The other forums are free for browsing, as is the information in the Be Informed section. In any case, good luck with your trip to Brazil. You're bound to have a good time, and imrthr is a long-time frequent visitor to Brazil, especially São Paulo, so he's a good source of information. Enjoy!

FWIW I'm just back from Argentina but 2 friends separately in Rio have been complaining about the frequency and duration of rain-showers since the start of March.

I went there in October and had good sunny weather, but there was rain the week before and the week after. It seems as if there can be rain in Rio pretty much any time of year.

In my travels to Rio-- I've principally gone during the months of October/Novemeber (spring), and the weather has been wonderful as a whole. But during the past four years, as in other parts of the world, our weather patterns have been unpredictable with the forever changes in climate. Normally you'd receive sun, sun, sun during the mentioned months, but at times, you'd get rain, too.

My suggestion is to go and make the better of it. I'd also suggest that you give yourself time and read what's in the archives here as well as join http://www.gaytravelbrazil.com. I've utilized the information that has been provided here as well as the aforementioned site; I've also written a lot to contribute, too!

Whenever you "take the plunge" and travel to the city in question: do "take in the culture" as well as meeting the men of your desires! Remember to "think" and "use" the large head rather extensively, too, as some men who've traveled to lovely Rio de janeiro have become rather saddened about various and sundry experiences which they underwent while there. They've "fallen in love," too, only to have been disappointed later!

I wrote all of the above to help, not to be judgmental in any way! -:)

Sorry for the delay, but I haven't checked this site in a while.

I think we also have the perfect guide for you that speaks English and who is waved in at the saunas since he's very well known. If he can't arrange it, no one can :)
