Apparently you can give to the Red Cross right from your phone by texting to 90999.

They will charge your cell phone bill for $10.

Here is a sample screen when you text "Haiti" to 90999:

The local newspaper is the Desert Sun, a Gannett paper. Their website, mydesert.com is conducting a poll to see how many of its readers plan to contribute to quake relief in Haiti. The answer is an overwhelming NO.

Can you imagine that? Here we are, right on the San Andreas fault ourselves, and my neighbors don't want to help quake victims! I'll bet their attitude would change if the quake had hit here.

Haiti is a troubled country of poor people so ill-served by those who have led them that you might believe they deserve a break from nature. But no, nature doesn't discriminate. It doesn't care if you were good or bad, you slide in the mud with the best of them. The tsunami is another example. All the good you did in your life was meaningless as the water came after you.

Haitians tend to be religious people, some into voodoo, many are Catholic. And it is the churches that often lead the relief effort. Having been in a big quake in San Francisco in 1989, I know how scary it is. But we survived our quake pretty well. Next time we may be asking help from others, and they will easily be able to make their answer based upon the good we did this week, when Haiti needed money from us.

God may provide, but He does it through us, so open up your wallet and help out.

That just proves the desert is populated by a bunch of old grumps. :D

I heard this morning that the text campaigns have brought in over a million in $10 chunks. It's a drop in the bucket compared to what will be needed, but the Jolie-Pitts put in a mil of their own too so it's starting to add up.

But don't let that deter you if you're inclined to give a few bucks. This is going to be ENORMOUSLY expensive.

Remember when I said, "wouldn't give a dollar if you asked for one?"

Haitians tend to be .

I used to live 8 blocks south of Little Haiti in Miami. Although I didn't end up befriending any of the Hatians, most were the type to mind their business and were generally good people. I have a mechanic there who is, and he would do repairs at the house a couple of times and was the best one on that side of town that I knew of.

As more newer development builds around Little Haiti, more people are beginning to have interaction with them and see they aren't such bad people for which the stigma holds.

Possible explanation....

Perhaps the people who participated in the poll are devotees of Rush Limbaugh and subscribe to the church of Pat Robertson?

According to the "estimable"? Pat Robertson, this was a disaster of their own making when they made a pact with the devil.

Please excuse me while I go wretch....

Apparently the Catholic Archbishop of Port-au-Prince, the top cleric in the nation, was killed when his office collapsed on him. I'll bet Robertson could make something of that, too.

Small Donations Add Up to Make a Big Difference.

Thanks for posting this thread, Expat. I just made a small contribution.

I personally didn't grasp the true level of this crisis until seeing photos of children covered in blood and dirt, and the collapsed shanties with body bags being carried in the background. Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere facing a catastrophe of Biblical proportions. How could anyone with an income and half a heart not want to give at least a little, even if it means sacrificing one or two cups of coffee or sodas this week? Collectively, small donations from everyone can make a world of difference for the suffering people of Haiti.

Pat Robinson is Pathetic.

Apparently God didn't want Pat Robinson to be U.S. President, either.

Thank God for that!

It would be interesting to know how much the Pope has contributed.

The Red Cross has always been fraud to me, starting many years back and including Liddy Dole running the show. The news link below proves it! Better bang-for-the-buck can be found, ie. Doctors Without Borders.

I agree, the Red Cross gets none of my money since the 9/11 debacle. There are many great sites to investigate and get ratings on charities...

It is worth a bit of research and also make sure that you use a charge card that is not going to take a fee out of your donation if at all possible...unless you are comfortable with that

If you dislike large high overhead organizations, try contacting a local church with a mission tie to Haiti. It's hard to beat a mission group for knowledge of local needs and conditions & all those volunteers translate into a low overhead operation.

I agree - I usually prefer to channel my donations through the Salvation Army.

from shyster Dubya himself...

Oh, the irony!

President George W. Bush is warning Americans not to fall for scams trying to raise money off the disaster in Haiti.

"I need to put a pitch in for the clintonbushhaitifund.org," Bush told NBC's David Gregory. "One of my concerns around any crisis is that shysters show up and take advantage of people's good will and generosity. So for people who want to help, one avenue besides the established NGO's would be to tap on that website and we'll help make sure your money is spent in a transparent accountable way," he said
