Happy cold turkey day.

Today marks the 34th annual Great American Smokeout, a day smokers across the country are asked to stop puffing for 24hours while they come up with a plan to quit for good.

(Which makes me wonder if our seaboy won the battle with nicotine.)

29 years for me...I remember my brother (who still smokes) saying that I would never make it. I went to the Shick Clinic, where they used aversion therapy, and it worked. Each night I would sit in a room the size of a closet, and smoke rapidly, one after another, until my eyes were watering and my nose was running. Every time I raised my hand to smoke, a small electric current went off on my arm.

The table in front of me had a multitude of cigarette butts on it, but the walls were surrounded by posters of happy smokers having Salem moments or Marlboro men getting ready to suck... dick? There was a mirror in front of me. The counselor asked me to look in the mirror, then look at the posters, and see what smokers really looked like.

This went on for five nights, then the counselor said that if I could light up a cigarette and smoke it all the way through, I would get my $500 refunded. I declined, and never smoked again. To this day I detest the smell of cigarettes.

Cigarettes then cost $6.10 a carton. I think I saved that $500 back and more. What made me finally ready? I was a at bar when a dear friend came up to me, and immediately recoiled at the smell of the smoke. That got me to realize that I didn't want that reaction. I had never been able to quit before, so I thank him to this day.

I went cold turkey a year ago last August 1st.

I went cold turkey in 1984. A friend said to me, if you are smoking in your 40's then it is not a matter of IF you will get emphysema but when. That made me seriously think about quitting and soon, I did.

I am but unfort I fell off with a loud thud. I'm about to pick myself off the ground & try again. There's no one to blame but myself.

I can't do the Altoids, they mess with my gums in a bad way. There is something in them that the gums do not like. For me it is the Supermint from Extra gum.

I think it took me 3 attempts - but it's been 20+ years since my last cig, and I no longer am tempted *ever!

You can do it! :)

I am one of the lucky ones. I never started - thank God because with my will power I'm sure I couldn't kick the habit.

I tried to smoke, thinking it looked cool and I liked the look of a fancy cigarette lighter on my coffee table. But I was never able to inhale, so what was the point?

I quit smoking two months ago after a bad day body surfing at a so cal beach. I had been "temporarily" smoking for two years that started on a job in Shanghai after an 11 year abstinence. Very surprised how that happened and equally surprised how much easier it was to stop this time. Just used a very strong desire to stop. Won't backslide again, I feel so much better.

well

It's hard to quit but I am sure you will be able to manage it. Your skin is very white for a smoker on your video.. So I guess you don't smoke a lot? A lot of smokers have a darker skin tone...

I stopped 39 years ago, because I was tired of always finding ash on my clothes. Luckily (that doesn't mean the same thing as "like Lucky"), I didn't need any help--I just finished a pack, said "This is the day," and never bought another one, which is why I was able to save enough money to retire early.

You hit on the real key to quitting: it has to be your time, and you have to be ready.

If you're not ready, no amount of "help" in the form of lozenges or even stronger drugs will help. And once you've made up your mind, having the help is nice but you can actually go it alone.

The key is making up your mind to do it, and meaning it.

I quit a year ago last June. It wasn't a cakewalk, but I'd made up my mind I was done.
