Hi,

I had read on this site that it is possible to put a particular poster on "ignore."

I think it means that I will not see anything the poster posts in a thread if I activate such a feature. Maybe that is true?

I looked through the various places on the site but cannot find anything that relates to ignore.

Does anyone know how to activate that feature?

By the way, I really enjoy most of the posts on this site.

This is how to place someone on your ignore list: Through your User Control Panel: User CP, Settings & Options, Edit Ignore List. Then, type their name into the empty text box and click 'Okay'.

Unfortunately, this site does not have a very good ignore because his posts will continue to show up listed among the other posts. You will just not be able to read them.

In "User CP" (control panel), click "Edit Ignore List".

Note that I'd expect a mixed bag of usefulness. If people quote your blocked poster when replying, you'll see the quoted text even if the original post is invisible.

thank you both very much

Just curious: why would one want to have the site mechanics "ignore" certain posters? If a regular poster has a history of offensive or stupid posts, I simply skip over his posts a lot of the time. However, even the most ridiculous posters (I won't name any of them, since I don't want to start a flame war here) occasionally say things that are interesting, and sometimes I even find myself in agreement with them. It is an unfortunate, though very human, trait to want to listen to voices with whom we already agree, but mechanically blocking out people who are easy enough to ignore anyway, it seems to me, really limits our ability to adjust our perceptions. The only place I would find the "ignore" function useful is in the private messages area.

This is basically the "charmer vs. whammer" debate of old. Why do some clients prefer a BFE when they hire, while other clients only want a wham-bam fuck? It's the same question. :)

I'm not a big fan of twit filters (and because of my role here I can't use it), but I do use them in some of the tech communities I participate in.

There is one individual in the tech forums (listed five times in my filter, of course) who tips the scale so much on the negative side that even when he was contributing a service of genuine value I left him filtered. The service, while valuable, was not valuable ENOUGH to outweigh his negative contributions.

This is a decision every poster needs to make for themselves. Because of our anonymous (well, until you hit the gossip blogs) nature, if you filter one ID you'll probably "hear" that voice come back with a different name. It's the nature of the beast.

But if filtering a poster makes you more comfortable reading posts here, why not? The feature is there for you to use should you wish to do so.

You say tomato...

Sort of an explanation

Looking at the OP's recent posts, I can't see where anyone has given him a hard time!

Hi Lucky,

Please see the above post by Deej. It answers so very well why I raised the question.

No one has given me a bad time. I enjoy most of the posts on this site from the many posters here. However, there are two individuals that post fairly often who repeatedly write stupid things. Almost everything they write is about themselves. Self-absorbed people rarely are interesting.

Thanks

I think it's just as easy to skip over the posts that carry their signature. The "ignore" feature IMO then becomes redundant.

If you use Firefox, there is another alternative which will allow you to more completely ignore a user.

There is a plug-in for Firefox called ffVb. It's available at this location. Installing it will allow you to ignore a user in a way that is almost total. ;)

I am so looking this up

I love the ignore feature. I get way more than enough disagreeable views in the REAL world outside of this message board.

To Ignore or Not To Ignore...

The problem with using the ignore feature, tempting though it may be in some cases, is that it might then become difficult to follow the sense of some threads, and you could even end up in a situation where you're being maliciously attacked without your being aware of it.

I agree and never use the ignore feature on any forum that I participate in. But I felt that folks should at least be aware of the possibilities available through the Firefox plugin. ;)

I used to have some people set to ignore on another board I read. Since you still saw they had posted something I found myself taking them off ignore because I was curious what they had said! Much better to skip over the posting and say "he's a creep" to yourself and move on.

I found this thread and revived it just to remind other citizens of its value. I'm a patient guy and can put up with alot, and "ignoring" another poster may cause a thread discussion not to flow well, but just today, a bothersome Hooville diva reached into my private messaging area to drop his unwelcome BS on me, so for the first time ever, I can now take advantage of this useful tool. Thanks Daddy for looking out for us!

It is a great reminder about an option that some may want to seriously consider. It is a shame that a troublesome person decided to send you a nasty message, it is one of the reasons that I no longer accept any messages, however I do miss the nice messages that people sent...

Oh well.

Very bravo~ Whether greatest enemy or friend, the greatest tool you will have understanding either is listening to them, beside making the enemy an allie~

To love without personal gain can be the most significant expression of self acceptance and giving human gift possible given our human nature. Strive for the Will to Love~

Love is not some place you come from. It's something you are through the acceptance of Life and living it and giving back to those learning how.

Desire is easy to suffice and satiate~ Need is the more important then satisfaction. Strive to understand how desires can suffice need and strive for that~ What you need will bring you more then what you desire unless your desires suffice your needs~

If humankind can not understand and utilize technology to necessary needs provision, what is the point of technology?

A flower is just a flower until it comes into the reality of another thing where it is then consumed, cherished or simply ignored to be what it is~

All things are like this~ and in all forms accepted as one purpose or another according to the understanding of the two.

You can't retire from who you truly are~

Ty.....Fortunately, this one's not an enemy; I simply choose not to waste my time or attention on him.

Just want to point out that you can click the "Report Post" icon in the lower left corner of the message, even in private messages.
