There are those who might argue that the Folsom Street Fair brings out the kinkier side of being gay, others say it is just a party celebrating sex. The SFGate website has a series of pictures of the event, and one thing those pictures did was to bring out the homophobes- at least judging by the comments attached to the post.

As always the media concentrates on only one aspect of the Folsom Street Fair. They leave out the bands, the dancing, the glorious weather, and the simple pleasure of being among friends. They ignore all of the booths typical to any street fair - jewelry merchants, t-shirts, health, aids prevention and they make little mention of the amount of money that is raised for charity.

I have never attended the fair but from most of the pictures I have seen over the years I get the impression it is largely attended by men "who have seen better days" so to speak.

I wonder why it doesn't attract a younger, hunkier crowd. I'm sure some hotties do attend but they are seldom shown in pictures. Any thoughts?

Tame pics

Lucky - thanks for posting the link. The pictures are tame in comparrison to others I've seen and what usually goes on. I realize that this is a main stream newspaper so they can't publish X-rated pictures. Imagine what the homophobes would say if they saw the more explicit pictures.

And yes zipperzone, there are plenty of hot young hunky guys there as well as the rest of us. More and more younger guys are getting into fetish play. It is becoming more and more acceptable and cool to be a bit open minded on such things. You should go sometime.

HOT ! Day

The Fair was a blast I saw lots of super hot guys and some sexxy guys that may not be super star sexxxy on the outside but were extremely sexy in attitude and style.

The thing for me at the FSF is the openness and cheerfulness of a very sex positive crowd smiles were everywhere.

I have lots of friends that do service for charities of their choice and its a huge party that raises tons of money for Non profits that are hurting right now with all the budget cuts. so while manning a beer booth or food stand or asking for donations at the gate everyone is having a great time.

anyway

the party was a blast stay tuned for a little media update from the street ;) hint hint

Too Much Sex

While hundreds of people enjoy watching the public sex, it only took one offended couple to get the police to try to stop it:

Sex tent: San Francisco mayoral candidate Bevan Dufty has landed smack in the middle of a touchy neighborhood problem - public sex at the Folsom Street Fair.

For years, the annual outdoor bacchanal was a feast of fetishes and public fellatio. But that may be changing.

According to the Bay Area Reporter, two people went up to a couple of cops during July's Up Your Alley Fair (the little brother of the Folsom Street bash) and complained about the public sex going on in plain sight. The cops explained that this was San Francisco and that the unwritten rule for the fair was, live and let live.

The pair filed a complaint with the Office of Citizen Complaints against the 14 officers assigned to Up Your Alley. So when the Folsom Street Fair rolled around a couple of months later, police brass - not wanting to get any more officers in trouble - started cracking down.

After a couple of warnings, people having public sex at the Folsom Street Fair were ejected from the festivities.

"It set a new tone about how they were going to handle the event," said Dufty, whose district includes the Castro.

A meeting was called, and up popped the idea of setting up a tent where people could have sex - or just watch - but where the proceedings would not be visible from the outside.

Dufty said he wasn't sure if the issue was big enough at this point to recommend any action.

"There are definitely people interested in seeing more public sex," Dufty said, but "right now, I'd just take it under advisement and wait and see what develops."

Spoken like a true candidate.

san francisco has a large kink community. it's too bad this yearly event celebrating this part of sex is being toned down. love fest, halloween, folsom.. it's all being diluted.

The thing about this complaint that really pisses me off is that if the "couple" didn't want to see public sex, what were they doing there in the 1st place. What did they expect to see - Julie Andrews singing selections from "The Sound of Music"?

Bottoms with collars and butts smeared with Crisco

Tops in black leather from South San Francisco

Fat cocks engorged from those tight-fitting rings

These are a few of my favorite things!

That's one of the most creative posts I've seen in all the years I've been hanging around here. Brava!

(And from what I understand, Miss Andrews is a bawdy ol' gal who'd probably approve!)

Sounds like code for "Hey, we can put it in a tent and charge an entrance fee".

Bravo to the two of you for a well needed smile today.

The "couple" probably heard about the Up Your Alley Fair and Folsom Street Fair and the goings on and did not like it one bit - so they went down to start trouble. :(

My first time at Dorey Alley was back in '96 - and I was a bit shocked at the goings on - even more so on my latest trip to Dorey in '08. But my thoughts were, hell it is SF!

Heck a couple years earlier I caught a portion of the Bay to Breakers race as it went through the Haight - and saw this guy running in full Roman battle dress (breast plate included) with a shield and spear! And it did not seem to be some cheap plastic costume either!

Never know what will happen when you travel to SF - like a nice dessert shared with the SF Twins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marian_and_Vivian_Brown) at Uncle Vito's (IIRC) at Bush and Powell a few years back!

Sounds like code for "Hey, we can put it in a tent and charge an entrance fee".

LOL

Not sure if this was my first thought or second - but the other thought was is there a big enough tent? ROFL

I think Zipperzone deserves a medal on this one. How can anyone resist a setup line like:

. . . What did they expect to see - Julie Andrews singing selections from "The Sound of Music"?

The muse simply cannot be denied! Thanks, Zipperzone! I think there's another verse with "slings' in there somewhere. And PK's definitely on a roll.

On topic briefly, I think that neighborhood is changing, as many South of Market neighborhoods are. I think they should make people moving in sign a waiver, saying they know the neighborhood hosts the Folsom Street Fair once a year, and make them swear to get over themselves for at least a day and look at things from a different angle.

I do too :)

Sadly when when I was a Dorey Alley I was with friends that did not share in my photography... one was a lover back in '96....
