Another serious query:

I would appreciate help with a list compilation of films (no straight to video or television only releases please) where the subject matter or one of the principal characters was or had been an escort/companion/whore/prostitute.

So far, we have the following but it is much to early in the morning and the Twink Hos are useless without coffee, which I neither drink nor keep on hand so we have to go out for it:

1. Pretty Woman

2. Klute

3. My Own Private Idaho

4. American Gigolo

5. Hustler White

6. Breakfast at Tiffany's

Your comments, suggestions, asides, and additions to this list would be greatly appreciated. This is research for something I am writing, not lessons for the Twinks, by the way.

A couple of years ago there was film that was very popular in Hong Kong called "Bishonen" (Japanese for "beautiful youth") about a gay hustler who falls in love with a young sexually-confused HK constable. A downbeat ending, but it was pretty groundbreaking for Hong Kong. You won't find it at Blockbuster or Hollywood, but I ordered my DVD off the web more than a year ago and I'm pretty sure that that it is still available.

There are the Filipino films about gay bar dancers/hustlers "Midnight Dancers" and "Macho Dancer"

I think the black/Vietnamese gay character in "The Delta" also did some hustling.

Then, of course, there's "Johns" and "Star Maps." While "Dawn: Portrait of a Teenage Runaway" with hunky Leigh McClosky in mid-70s hustlerwear was made-for-TV, it did play abroad as a feature film.

And who can forget the late, gorgeous Robert La Tourneaux as Cowboy in "The Boys in the Band."

"The Owl and the Pussycat" with Barbra Streisand

"Nuts" with Barbra Streisand

Also, there was "Alexander: The other side of Dawn" which had hunky Leigh McClosky and Eve Plumb. Literally it did show Alexander's side of the story-he was a street hustler.

There was a movie in the early 80's with Season Hubley where she played a prostitute but I forget the name of hit. She was trying to escape her violent pimp

Does Pat Benatar's video "Love is a Battlefield" count?

Two Barbra movies:

The Owl and the Pussycat

Nuts

>Nuts

I know the films, duh, but for some reason I read "Owl and Pussycat" but thought "What's up Doc" which of course doesn't have any prostitutes, just lots of laughs. My bad. Sorry.

Check out WHORE starring Theresa Russell and directed by Ken Russell.

This movie came out in 1991 and I saw it not too long after I started escorting.

Porn Star Ginger Lynn makes an appearance in this twisted movie. I LOVED it! I laughed out loud at more than one scene.}>

Men Who Hire On Film

>Can't believe no one has mentioned the best: Nights of

>Cabiria by Felini.

Actually, I mentioned it elsewhere, as I did the Passolini film on Italian prostitutes but then I did make the Twinks sit through those, which was a total disaster. I mean who watches a movie with popcorn and a tub of lube?

Thank you all for all the titles thus far, keep them coming. What exactly did Mrs. Brolin do in Nuts?

I will, by the way, be consulting some film books and have, but none of them quite has a cross-index reference under "whore," "prostitute," or "escort." There was a cross-reference for "slut" with a particular familiar picture of someone's ass, but it was so tiny, it was hard to be certain....

RE: Men Who Hire On Film

In "Nuts", Barbra as Claudia was a prostitute who was charged with a crime (I think she killed a client in self-defense, but it's been many years since I saw the film). She wanted the case to be tried, but her lawyer and parents pushed to have Claudia declared mentally incompetent to stand trial. Their main argument for mental illness was that she was a prostitute who seemed to enjoy her work. She bragged about making $100 or so dollars an hour (this was 1987).

The film ended with Claudia winning the right to stand trial. She got sympathy after she broke down on the stand remembering her stepfather's sexual abuse.

RE: Men Who Hire On Film

Here are a few:

Cinderella Libery (Marsha Mason)

Working Girls (not the Melanie Griffith film, but an '80's indie)

Paris is Burning (character of "angel")

The Velocity of Gary (dunno if it ever played theaters, tho)

I Want To Live (they called Susan Hayward a "B-girl" -- 1950's lingo for a hooker -- she won the Oscar)

Elmer Gantry (Shirley Jones won Oscar)

From Here To Eternity (Donna Reed won Oscar, tho her profession was "toned-down" for the flik)

Mighty Aphrodite (Mira Sorvino won Oscar -- see a patttern??)

East of Eden (Jo Van Fleet plays James Dean's Mom-- and a madam of a whorehouse -- and you guessed it -- WON AN OSCAR!!)

How about Less Than Zero?

In that film, Robert Downey Jr's character Julian, is a cocaine addict who loses everything, eventually serving as a m4m escort in order to work off the debt he has acquired with his drug dealer, james Spader.

This film is a good example, Robert Downey was a major character and the prostitution was a crucial aspect of the plot.

However, should we count the scene in Basketball Diaries -- which someone else mentioned elsewhere on the Board -- as it does involve a major character from the film but was the prostitution itself key to the story?

I really do appreciate everyone's contribution. I am planning on writing this up and am still looking for films, with theatrical runs, which can include television films IF they had theatrical runs, foreign films -- beyond what has been mentioned thus far, The Blue Hour comes to mind as does the film in Greece with male and female prostitution whose title escapes me but I am sure one of the men with a preference for young flesh will recall it, it played the gay film festival circuit last summer is now available on tape), as well as any small, independent releases -- Lust In The Dust was the Twinks' joint contribution from this department, which no one has surprisingly mentioned. They were "damn proud" of that fact, let me tell you.

I'm really surprised that one of my favorites hasn't been mentioned. We should not forget Shirley Mclaine in "Sweet Charity"

It also contains one of the best dance numbers I've ever seen in a musical - Hey Big Spender!

Here's another one for your collection. I remember being very enamored of this movie at the time, especially when Billy Baldwin was servicing one of his older clients.

FEMale clients only, sigh......

Three of Hearts

Date Released: 4/30/93

Running Length: 1:41

Rated: R (Mature themes, language, sexual situations, violence)

Starring: William Baldwin, Kelly Lynch, Sherilyn Fenn, Joe Pantoliano

Director: Yurek Bogayevicz

Producers: Joel B. Michaels and Matthew Irmas

Screenplay: Adam Greenman and Mitch Glazer

Music: Joe Jackson

Released by New Line Cinema

The relationship between Connie (Kelly Lynch) and Ellen (Sherilyn Fenn) is about to end. Needing "space", Ellen breaks the news to her lover that it's time to move on. Crushed and on the verge of a breakdown, Connie can't let Ellen simply disappear from her life, but, as determined as she is to rekindle things, Ellen is equally sure that it would be better for them not to see each other. Meanwhile, needing a date for her sister's wedding, Connie hires Joe (William Baldwin), a male escort. The two become friends, and, together, they concoct a scheme by which Connie can get her lover back: Joe will get Ellen to fall in love with him, then dump her. Emotionally distraught and no longer able to trust men, Ellen will presumably come back to Connie. Unfortunately, as Joe puts the plan into action, he unexpectedly falls for his intended "victim".

Here's yet another one for you. This periodically runs on SHowtime and or HBO:

Loverboy captures the 80's feel with punk hair styling, 80's clothing, and the romantic comedy feel. Not to mention special appearances by Kirstie Alley, Carrie Fisher, and Robert Picardo.

Randy Bodek (Patrick Dempsey) needs to go back to college.

Similarly to "Soul Man" with C. Thomas Howell, Randy loses support for his college tuition from his parents. Rather than the scholarship option as played out in "Soul Man", Randy is forced to find a job so that he can go back to school to be with his girlfriend, Jenny (Nancy Valen).

He picks up a job being a pizza delivery boy for Señor Pizza. Before long he meets and befriends Alex (Barbara Carrera), who seduces him and shows him the way of a gigolo, giving his number to others like her.

Whenever there's an order for "extra anchovies", Randy has to provide an extra special service for the customers. As a result of his attentions he becomes the "Love doctor of Beverly Hills.".

A great success at $200 a time, Randy has literally to drag himself out to the mansions of his customers.

And this opens up the way to several hilarious sequences as he tries to earn enough money to get back to school.

The movie has it's neat moments, like when, in a bid to silverscreen magic, Patrick's character tries to learn how to dance similar to Fred Astaire. Some more of this can be seen in "Happy Together", in the rooftop dance scene.
