For anyone who has traveled to Montreal but not to Rio, I wanted to share this bit of wisdom from one of the "early-posters". This is from a thread on MER about Rio over the memorial day weekend, by Tomcal....

I like Montreal and there are definitely hot guys there, but for the price of ONE LAP dance there you can have sex for an hour with a hot guy in Brazil and for the price of one escort in Montreal you can be with 10 guys in Rio! The down side it's 10 hr longer flight, but right now the airfares between the two places from L.A. are not that different and with 5 saunas in Rio you have several hundred guys to pick from. So for me the longer flight is worth it! One other thing about Brazil, none of the guys there seem to pay much attention to time, usually I have to get them going, I have never had one say "oh ur hour is up!" At the suanas they keep track of the time as they need to turn the rooms over. On overnights it's the same thing, I have to work to get them out of the room by noon!

Thanks. I never thought about it before. Maybe I have got to start looking at a trip to Rio. I speak Italian but no Spanish. What do I need to knwo and learn before embarking on a trip. Also, where can I find guidance on finding these hundreds of opportunities?

Happyguy2,

First off, in Brazil they speak Portuguese, not Spanish or Italian. But although the pronunciation is quite different, the languages are similar enough that a Spanish or Italian speaker should be able to communicate a little bit with a Portuguese-speaker and vice versa.

I'd highly recommend going to http://www.gaytravelbrazil.com for information on Brazil. I've booked my last two trips there and was well taken care of. Plus, they have a message board similar to this site where you can read up on what you'd want to know about the country, the city of Rio de Janeiro in particular, and the gay scene. Check it out. Have a blast!

i would also recommend the gaytravelbrazil site. .It, along with the archives here and at MER helped me to feel comfortable enough to take the plunge. I do not speak Portuguese, but I do speak some Spanish. I was able to communicate enough to get my points across. And even though very little English was spoken outside of the Atlantico hotel, I found the people in general to be very nice and eager to try to understand. I fell in love with Rio this past November, and hope to return in November or December of this year..

On the gaytravelbrazil site, there is a section of the messageboard devoted to words and phrases you will need for the gay/sauna scene....

Sleep

The flight is not as bad as it seems. The times I have gone I have scheduled a late night, one stop flight. I have also gone to my doctor or called him and had him prescribe a "little something" that I take when I want to sleep. When I wake up, it is morning. I get off refreshed and ready for the great sex that no doubt awaits me that day.

safety..

Rio is a large city in a foreign country with a population of approximately 10 million people. Is it safe? Do you feel safe walking the streets of NYC alone? It is all about common sense. If you stick to the tourist areas, don't flash signs of wealth (showing wads of money, jewelry, cameras, etc) and be aware of your surroundings, you should have no problems.. But there are many parts of the city that I wouldn't venture into. But the same can be said for almost any major city, be it in a foreign country of in the US... Even here in Phoenix, there are parts of the city that I would not want to be caught in alone at night..

Common sense, common sense, common sense... it goes along way...

Hey guys,

Is Rio safe though? Cheap is great, but if people are desperate for money, it can translate into higher crime. Montreal ... well, it's Canada. We thank people for robbing us!

Josh.

Josh, read everything that's at this site currently as well as in the archives regarding Rio de janeiro. Note this information in "Escorts South..., and as others have noted-- go to http://www.gaytravelbrazil.com for outstanding, great information and guidance and perhaps a booking through Drey.

I've been fortunate enough to have begun my journeys to Brazil in 2002. Thus far I've been to this country (varying parts) and always to Rio seven times in six years and plan to return in October-- spring in South America. Go for the culture and the people, and of course for the gorgeous men that reside there.

I don't know Brazilian Portuguese but have managed to meander throughout the city via taxi as well as via the bus. At night if I am traveling during the late hours-- I always have done this via taxi, but JOSH, in terms of Rio being a safe city-- I'd say in general yes.

Just use common sense and read what's available at the aforementioned sites. That way you should not have any difficulty.

Lastly-- go to http://www.netgay.com.br. It's a site that has a lot of information (gay) too. If you desire to seek an independent escort as well as guys from escort sites, that's an alternative too. I've used all sources and have not been taken advantage of....

Your chances of being robbed in Rio are many times greater than in Montreal, just check the statistics. Montreal does have a problem with car theft and extra caution needs to be exercised. As a tourist you can wear your normal jewellry and watches in Montreal, even Rolexes, without worrying about theft. Not Rio.

When I was in Rio I took all the precautions, wore a plastic watch etc and had no problem. My nephew and his wife were there three weeks later and were robbed at knifepoint just outside the Palace Cococabano in broad daylight.

I would take issue with the remark that there are places one should not go at night in any city. I can't think of one such place in Montreal or many Canadian cities. Same for European cities. Unfortunately cannot say the same for the US, where gun crime is rampant. The US really needs to look at their gun laws and introduce sensible gun control for the 21st century. Just my view.

Is there a way to have a gun control law that will take guns out of the hands of criminals without taking them out of the hands of others? Unfortunately, it seems that the way most gun control laws work is to remove guns from everyone and the HOPE that the government will never run amok and that criminals will obey the no guns law. Fat chance.

Best regards,

KMEM

Obviously all escorts are different. But as someone who has never been to Brazil, I would imagine that being a more " Latin" country the "machismo" factor is high. For example, I've heard that in some Latin countries, the guys don't really consider themselves gay just because they "have sex with guys" because they have hetero sex too. I am not trying to get into debate about straight-laced American and Northern European cultures rigid ideas of sexuality/bisexuality. My question is regarding more the cultural mores in place in Brazil. Do most of these Brazilian escorts only top or are a lot of them versatile/bottom? What's the status of kissing--do they deep kiss? And finally, it possible to find one that doesn't smoke?

Thanks,

Gman

My experience with Brazilian men (and it was limited to the baths in Rio and Sao Paulo) was that they are pretty willing to fuck anybody but it is not the BFE. More of a wham, bang, thank you m'am. Not that I complained about it but it left something wanting. I didn't get any kissing and I'm not that bad looking (or so my friends tell me!).

ok.. in regards to kissing.. at least in the sauna guys that I met.. they all are very willing and wanting to kiss long and deep....They are very passionate...As far as anal sex.. in the public areas, most of the guys claim to be activo (top) only.. but behind closed doors, away from their friends, most can be pretty easily persuaded to do whatever..even if it means a few more Reis, remember, the going rate for the "programma" is 50R, which is about 25$ US.. so even if you doubled it to 100R, you are still getting full sex with a very hot guy for around 50$ US... or the cost about 3 songs in the backroom in Montreal. Most of the guys may consider themselves straight..they have girlfriends/wives/kids, but they very willingly engage in sex with men. Does the label mean that much to you?

The label didn't mean much--I was just wondering whether the machismo factor would prevent bottoming. The other thing would be if they were forcing themselves to bottom and didn't really like it. I mean I am not saying I am great top--but if being topped was painful because they don't normally do it--well that's no fun for me. Also if they can't relax, I loose my erection pretty quickly slamming against a closed--well you know.

Just back from Rio. You have as much chance of being robbed in Ipanema, and the neighborhood to it's left as you do in NYC West Village. I saw Upper West Side looking Mom's talking on their cell phones and pushing their babies on the ped path along the beach as late as 11p at night. People JOGGING on the beach at night, and savvy, spoiled, hipsters strolling the charming streets at night.

Don't stress, you're safe. Have fun.

Thumper, would you care to rewrite the advice given in the forum Escorts South of the US? That advice, which was prepared by Americans living in Rio, has stressed the importance of being careful in Rio, particularly at night. One point they make is NEVER go on the beach after dark. That is actually something I wouldn't do in Miami either. They make a distinction between the beach and the wide sidewalks that border the beach on the road side, they are OK.

Also I would distinguish between Ipamema and Cococabana beach areas. The latter is heavily commercial with many international hotels and restaurants catering to tourists. Ipamema has a few hotels and the rest are upscale apartment houses, like Park Avenue in New York. You wouldn't expect to be mugged there as that is where the wealthy Brazilians live! The advice givenin the other forum is that crime is highest where the tourists congregate, which is natural since they have a lot more what the desperadoes want.

Luv2Play, sorry that happened to your nephew and his wife and that's highly unusual, from my experience, for that to occur in broad daylight.

I've been to both cities, and the homeless people were the ones that annoyed me in Montreal. Some were a little scary to me.

I would be interested to know if anything they were carrying pinpointed them as a target. I take camcorders to the beach, but I keep it in one those plastic shoppping bags they give out.

Criminals like to hang-out where the tourists are and if you think about it, only tourists can afford to stay at the Copacabana Palace. The straight nightclub "Help" that's frequented by straight tourists is also a target after dark.

From most Brazilians that I've chatted with, Copacabana Beach is less safe than many parts of Rio unless you take the proper precautions. Some have said that the favelas are safer :)

But, I typically go during the day with a group of gorgeous Brazilians and have never had a problem and once even late at night. But, it's best not to let people overhear you speaking English. The Essentials section of http://www.gaytravelbrazil.com has a lot of advice.

Ipanema is typically safer, and I'd recommend that first-time travelers use one of GTBs guides on their first visit (Welington's very cute BTW) unless they're going with a veteran traveler there.

Glutes, the member who was murdered in Rio had been staying there a year in an apartment without adequte security so I wouldn't consider him a tourist. The other member who was robbed was in a sauna with his street clothes, R$350 in his pocket, and dancing around inviting guys to grab his ass. Not very smart in my opinion :)

With the proper precautions, it can be as safe as any major city. Keep in mind the population of Rio is around 13 million.

As someone who has been traveling to Montreal since 1999,

and Rio since 2005, I don't think you can realy compare the

two cities (apples & oranges). I do like both apples and oranges

and Both Montreal & Rio have brought me numerous and long

lasting, happy memories.

Regarding safety - Montreal is certainly alot safer than Rio.

However, Rio is no Baghdad. I have never felt nervious or

affraid whilst in Rio. While no place is 100% safe and even

in the safest of places you can still become a victim of crime

(the cousin of a friend of mine was murdered-by gun-in oh so

safe Canada), if you follow common sense and the guidelines

from GayTravelBrazil you should be safe.

Regarding the Brazilian guys and machismo. Well they are mostly

very "straight" acting this does not prevent them from sticking

their tongue far enough down to tickle your tonseils. For many of

the sauna boys, this is there only source of income and by Brazilian

standards it is quite good, by being a top only it limits the ability to

earn their income; therefore, most are also versitle; however, you

need to be descrete when you ask them-they don't want everyone

to know their business. Your encounter with your Brazilian sauna boy

can be what you want - rough hot sex; or a passionate caressing

"boyfriend" experience. Most who bottom (unless they're brand new)

will be able to satisfy you with gusto and passion.

Another thing I like about Rio is that you can spend the day at the

beach (with a sexy sauna boy or two). Nonetheless, I also enjoy

walking the hills and street of Montreal - I'll be there in August.

In Montreal, it is easier getting around and communicating if you

only speak English - especial with working boiz, then it is in Rio...

however even for the linguistically imparied, it is still relatively easy

to get laid in Rio.

Of course the bigest difference is in the Rio saunas the garotos are

sex workers ... it is legal and there is no need to be coy ... the fees

are also alot cheaper then in Montreal. In the Montreal strip clubs,

many claim they are dansers, not escorts, and are very limited in what

they will do - after a good many dances they become much more liberal

in what they will do, but even so there is only so much you can do in the

confines of the private dance booth.

Both Montreal & Rio are wonderful cities with so many wonderful,

super sexy, working boiz.

Tchau,

Fisher

?Guides

Can someone explain more about hiring a guide? I am not signed up for the gay travel Brazil site, and as a non-member, it didn't give much information. Are these guys strictly tour guides or combination tour guides/escorts?
