It worked for him and, obviously, his time to go coincided with his wish to do so.

But, people have jumped or fallen out of aircraft at thousands of feet above the ground and survived (without benefit of a parachute or any thing other than it wasn't their time). I am not willing to say such a fall did them any good.

Lucky-

That brings to mind a scenario used by instructors at concealed permit classes: How do you know when you will need your gun? If someone tries to carjack you in a parking lot, do you say, excuse me for a moment, I need to get something out of my glove box? The point being, if you have a legal permit to carry a hand gun it should be on your hip or in your hand.

I don't mean for that to sound like a lecture and I am fully aware that most posters, if not most readers, of this MB don't believe that the populace should be armed, even if trained and permitted. I am not an NRA flamer; just trying to be realistic and prepared for any eventuality I can think of and afford.

One never knows where a hijacked thread will lead, does one?

My former boss had a brother-in-law who lived in Beverly Hills years ago and he carried a pistol under the front seat of his Bentley. I don't know if he had a permit or if this was lawful in California but he didn't give a damn. The only reason I know this is that my boss was driving his brother-in-law's car on a visit and found the gun inadvertently. He was disturbed enough that he never went back to LA and his relatives moved to Seattle not long after that.

KMEM, one eventuality you might want to prepare for is being shot dead by the cops. Officers can get all kinds of antsy when they spot a pistol on you. If you have made a decision to carry, I hope you've given some serious thought as to how to handle being approached by a cop at night.

I'm no anti-gun nut. I've owned guns in the past and still would if I had any use for one. One of my friends has 21 firearms in his collection, but no one I know totes one one on his hip. Experience has convinced me that carrying a gun gets folks into trouble far more often than it gets them out.

Being shot, dead or otherwise, by either the cops or the robbers is exactly what I am intending to avoid. One point of a concealed carry permit is for it NOT to be spotted. I also am a very law abiding citizen and have no intention of doing any thing or being any where that might arouse the suspicions of any law enforcement official. My days of flying into a little airport in the middle of the night are over. Corporate pilots leave early in the morning and get home late in the afternoon or so they like to characterize their life style.

Regardless of all that, my only point was if you need your gun it does little good for it to be in the glove box or the trunk or at home when you are out and about. My full intention is to never need it.

Thanks for your concern.

Best regards,

KMEM

PS--If it makes you feel any better, I have had 3 times the minimum required training to be issued a carry permit in this state. I don't drink and drive and I don't drink and go armed.

KMEM: It's a small world. One of my 1st cousins flys for a major airline. Two of my uncles flew charter. Another uncle made it half-way through Army flight school in WWII before they caught him memorizing the color-blindness charts. Broke his heart when they busted him. Uncle X was so flying crazy he once flew 400 miles home 2 days after having half his stomach removed.

Back on (hijacked) topic: My cop friends say that most cops are trained to look for indications of a concealed weapon whenever they approach someone they don't know. According to them clothing tends to hang/drape/move a bit differently if there's a pistol underneath. Be careful. Once the adrenaline hits, a scared young cop may not always use the best judgment. New York's finest just killed one of their own this week. Again. My local city prosecutor once got the snot beat out of him by one of his own new recruits when he accidently pulled a pocket knife out instead of his car keys. :p Shit happens, so give some thought to how you're going to let that officer know you're one of the good guys when you get pulled over for a broken tail light. ;)

My previous post was more directed to lurkers reading your post than to you personally. Some guys get a false sense of safety when they're carrying a pistol. They go places and do things that they would avoid if they weren't armed and get themselves (and others) hurt. I agree it's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6, but better yet to stay away from situations where you may have to make that choice.

My best regards to you also,

MsGuy

P.S. and off topic: This week one of those talking heads on C-SPAN claimed that the Federal Reserve has just about doubled the total sum of dollars in circulation in the last six months, aka "quantitative easing" and "monetarizing Federal debt." If that's true, in about 6 months we'll know whether Milton Freidman's view or the excess productive capacity view is right about the source of inflation. Am I the only one here that finds that kind of scary?

You sure tossed that in a remote corner.

Lucky, KMEM is a something of a libertarian as was Freidman. While I was watching that C-SPAN program it occurred to me that such a massive increase in money supply would act as a real life lab experiment for Freidman's theories on inflation. I thought KMEM might find that idea interesting so I tacked it onto a post I knew he would read. Honestly, except for the two of us, I didn't think anybody was still following this thread and doubted that anyone else would care much about Freidman's ideas. If I was wrong please feel free to jump in. I don't think this thread can get anymore hijacked than it already is! :D

As you know, aviation is a small world. I either know or know of or know someone who does know your flying relatives. :)

I sincerely believe that Lucky not only writes far more posts than anyone else but also reads more posts than anyone else; that is not a slam but merely a comment on unrequited curiousity.

I carry my photo ID carry permit in my shirt pocket where it is handy to show and hand over to any interested police official. However, I mainly try to follow the advice you offered and that is to stay away from potential problems.

If nothing else I submit that the empircial evidence throughout the history of the US shows that, like the poor, the unemployed will always be with us. (Those are not always the same.) Therefore it follows that the US cannot spend its' way out of debt or solve unemployment with dollars. However, if the US continues on such a monetary course, it can make all of us poor or at least much poorer.

Best regards,

KMEM

Since it's just the 3 of us, I will say that I read far fewer posts than one might think. I usually stick to the Lounge and the Politics forums, occasionally looking at Brazil or Asian stuff. There are whole threads that I never see. Obviously I try to read posts by people I find interesting. I think both of you are hard to peg, so I read you to enlighten myself further.
