CAMPUS THEATER - SAN FRANCISCO - CLOSING?

I heard a rumor that the Campus Theater (Club220) in San Francisco, which has been open for many years, may be closing. Anyone know if this is true, and if so, when and why? The place had ups and downs; the management really let this place go in the past few years. They used to have so many hot young dancers and wild sex shows with two to five dancers, not to mention quarterly "20 man" shows which were awesome -- sex everywhere on stage and in the audience -- not that long ago. But now their dancers are pretty lame. Too bad.

 

I kept hoping they'd get the place back into an upswing like it was about 5 or 6 years ago.

 

Anyone know what the rap is?

They have an ad running in the Odyssey club rag that says they've lost their lease and will be closing February 29th at midnight. End of an era for sure, although I agree with you that the place has seen better days.

Wow ... back when I used to live in the Bay Area, I remember going there-- it was my first time in a gay theater (late '70s.) I remember seeing old porn stars like Chris Burns, Chad Johnson, Lou Cass, etc. at their jack-off shows. Sigh ... not too many places like that left anywhere in the country-- I guess the Nob Hill is about it-- maybe Man's Country in Chicago?

What about Jack Wrangler? He was my favorite during the late 70's. Spent some time with him during his Follies show in DC back then.

So, are any of you going for one last hurrah? One last toast to whatever it is you do there? I've heard stories and read them on line but never was there and it appears that I never will. I hope someone goes back and has one last spurt of fun before it closes...hey, you'd be making history! :7

I was hoping to go one more time next month when I visit. I have so many great memories of the Campus Theater. Chad Donovan's appearance there one time that I got to see. The cheesy New Meat videos that were filmed there in the theater.

I was in San Francisco over President's Day weekend, and as usual I went to the Campus Theater among my travels. The place has really gone down over the past decade that I have been visiting it. I remember when the strip shows downstairs were the HOTTEST anywheres. And lord knows how many times I did the "shower room show" afterwards. Now it is all just a memory. [sigh]

 

Guess that leaves us Nob Hill and the Tearoom. Wonder if we can get a historic designation for one of these places before they are all gone?

My "sources" tell me that the owner wants to do something else with the space at campus.

 

In other San Francisco news, same source told me that My Place is closing as well.

There was an item about it on the news tonight.

 

Apparently it is going to re-open as a "strip club" and a school that is located a few doors away is protesting this.

 

The fact that it had been a gay "cinema" for many years was mentioned, and reference was also made to the building having a "new owner". The story didn't make it clear whether the proposed new strip club was gay or str8, but it sounded to me as if it was str8.

Look what happens when you turn a gay club into a st8 club... sad.
