Other Guides due to Eduardo's Unreliability

I have heard from several of you independently that Eduardo is becoming increasingly unreliable due to "extra-curricular activities"...if so, does anyone know of other guys that can be trusted and are reliable to assist with tracking down guys for us, etc?

I can't speak definitively about Eduardo's reliability, but my impression is that when he's not being directly confronted with "temptation" he's pretty reliable. At the moment, I don't know of another guy with Eduardo's unique qualifications as a guide. However, you really don't need someone in order to have a good time in Rio, sexually.

 

Please read and re-read the Brazilian Saunas review(s) and the Message Center postings (including the FAQ) and also the postings on Portuguese for the saunas. With a VERY basic few words you'll manage just fine. The guys at the saunas and at Corujinha are not exactly difficult to approach! ;-) In fact, all you have to do is make eye contact and smile at the guy your interested in, or gesture to him, and he'll come over, assuming he hasn't already taken the initiative!

 

These days Rio has lots of foreign visitors, many of them regulars, and you'll almost always find an experienced English-speaker at the saunas or the bar. There are also several English-speaking locals around most evenings at Corujinha after around 10:30. Most are willing to be helpful if you need someone to explain things to you. (They may NOT be interested in spending all their time holding your hand, though. You're a grown-up and shouldn't need that much care-taking!)

 

A suggestion to avoid the kind of confusion that may have contributed to the unpleasant situation described in the thread on violence in Rio: Learn to say 50 reais in Portuguese ("cincuenta reais") and be sure you say it clearly to the guy you're going with at the sauna BEFORE going to a cabine with him, and make sure he's assented. If you aren't sure if he understood, get a piece of paper and a pen at the bar or front desk (a napkin will do) and write R$50 on it and show it to him. If you don't know the words for pen and paper, gesturing writing should get you what you want.

As Trilingual stated in his previous response--one doesn't really need a guide to navigate in the saunas in Rio. If you do your homework by reading this forum extensively prior to your journey-- you should be able to manage and have a very swell time.

 

When I first went to Brasil and to Rio in October of 2002 (My that seems like ancient history now.),I read everything here that was available regarding the sauna scene as well as the cultural attributes that Brasil (Rio) affords one. At Estacao, which was the first sauna that I visited, I followed the expert advice that I'd gleaned from this forum and did not make any unnecessary mistakes or be exploited. I treated the boys with whom I went with the utmost respect, and they did likewise. So, again, let me reiterate and echo what Tri has so succinctly stated (as always): read what's available, and you should be able to enjoy yourself to the fullest extent.

 

Now, if you want a guide to assist you beyond the sauna scene, I'd highly recommend you contact Tom at excitedspeedo@yahoo.com.br. Presently, he's going to a private school to study international relations, but he advertises on http://www.Rentboy.com. When I was in Rio in October/November of 2003--I solicited his services to serve exclusively as a guide and to accompany me to various areas of Rio. I saw him twice and had the most delightful cultural and personal experiences. He's cute; he speaks English reasonably well; he's knowledgeable; personable and warm as well as quite professional. Lastly, he formerly worked for RioTur but decided to act as a free lance guide in his city.

 

Because his family resides in Rio's Copa as well as other areas, Tom does NOT go to saunas or to gay venues with clients. If you want to seek him for escort services, that can be arranged with him. This time I only sought him for his guide expertise and would highly, highly recommend him.

It depends on the amount of hours he spends with you. I used Eduardo's service's back in October and for four hours he charged me R$250.00. I also paid for his drinks and food during that time.

Email him with exactly what you want and ask him for his hourly rate. He will I am sure give you a lower rate if you need him for say 4 hours or more...With regards to the Agencies, they have English speaking people to help out. If you do not wish to take on Eduardo's services, then as was mentioned before use a pencil and piece of paper (at the sauna's) and write R$50.00...make sure you get the "okay" from the young man. Have a fun, safe time in Rio....

Eduardo is a terrific person and a good guide although I does not know Sao Pauolo.

 

Just make sure you agree on the price of his services in advance.

I want to clear up the possible misinformation regarding Eduardo.

He is a friend and is useful for the RIGHT purposes in Rio and you can be assured you will enjoy him and he will not dissapoint if your expectations are in line with his ability to perform.

If you need a real tour guide, definite transportation, or have plans that make it necessary to have your guide there - use another guide.

Eduardo is sweet, young, but indeed not highly motivated, well informed, or reliable. He is easily swayed by the wrong influences. For a real guide use the services of someone arranged by Carlo Romanus or the informed and interesting Carlo Cox.

I have used both with perfect satisfaction. My best tour of Rio was one that Carlo took me on to Santa Theresa - he is a storehouse of Rio info. If you need someone to show you how the saunas work and translate things (which you should be able to do on your own) or arrange /hold a table at Corujinha - use Eduardo. He is fun to be with and although his information is not always 100% accurate - he is a pleasure to spend time with. Arrange the hourly fee up front - keep it reasonable (20R an hour or so)- and you will be most pleased. He speaks enough English to meet your needs. You will enjoy your time especially if you are timid or bashful. There is no one better to take you to the sauna or sit with you at Corujinha. I give Eduardo a high recommendation for guiding in those areas ONLY. As he gets older, much of his unreliability will clear. He is very young.

Do not lend money to any of the boys as they consider it a gift and do not (and probably can not) budget in the way we do. If you want to tip well for great service - do so. Be clear that when you deal with Eduardo EXACTLY what time you will meet, what you expect, and you will not accept any excuses like head colds, or novella sort of drama and you will be very pleased. He is not the sort of person to

deal with travel necessities - just those personal sorts of fun things. There are many boys who know him and he can "arrange" things.

 

My friends think fondly of Eduardo and enjoyed meeting him as will your friends - just dont expect things that are beyond ability to deliver.

Also, while you at the sauna and have negotiated a certain price before going to the cabine--BE SURE to stick to the agreed amount if the guy asks for more! In your being nicely aggressive--you will not feel exploited.

 

Last October when I went to Club 117, one of the guys that joined me in a cabine wanted to raise his rate; I held firm; we both left the cabine speaking to each other and continuing to socialize!:-)

When I was in Brasil in October/November for a month-- all of my guides came from CarloRio's Travel Agency; I made specific requests before arriving in Brazil and was 150% satisfied. Although none of the guys took me to any saunas, my guide in Salvador, Bahia really wanted me to sample the flavors of the saunas in his city while I was there, but I had to forego this adventure. Next time, yes, I will definitely go to a couple of saunas in Bahia.

Whatever may have happened earlier this year with Eduardo and HooBoy's magical mystery tour is over. Eduardo is back in town, back in business, and looking forward to working with M4Mers. I had a long chat with him last night at Corujinha and he's fine. Sounds like he and Hoo took a trip to the moon on gossamer wings, but it was just one of those things. Life's back to normal again! I want to make it clear - Eduardo is outstanding.

 

It is me who is no day at the beach.

 

Any problem we may have stemmed from the fact that there was that no price was agreed on from the beginning. What should have been a two day stay in SP for Eduardo stretched into weeks because I was obsessed with getting the web show set up and poor Eduardo was basically stuck with a crazy person. The thousands of dollars of fine clothes he went home with, which he told me as he walked out the door, he did not ask for (and that is true) have nothing to do with it.

 

But, please...I have said it before, if I ever find myself in Rio again, I will definitely hire Eduardo on a pre-determined rate. He really looked after me and he did not steal a thing from me.
