On a more serious note, a top is the one doing the fucking, and the bottom is on the receiving end. These are the terms used, even if the top is on the bottom (e.g., the "top" is lying on his back while the "bottom" is lowering himself on the top's cock).

It's a lot better though if you let the bottom slide the condom on you, if you're the top... :)

GD (Welcome as well)

"Top" and "bottom" are roles that don't only refer to fucking. In general, a top is the one whose cock is being taken care of, either anally or orally, and the bottom is the one taking care of it. In a broader psychological sense, the top is supposedly the one whose desires are being satisfied by the bottom, so that in an s/m scene, for instance, it is usually the bottom who licks the top's boots, and the bottom who gets tied up by the top. Of course, in reality the bottom wants to service or be used by the top in some way (unless it is a genuine rape, in which case there is no voluntary "role playing"), so the bottom's sexual desires are satisfied as much as the top's--probably moreso if the bottom is the client and the top is the escort.

Don't worry about the good-natured ribbing you got in the first responses: yours really was not such a silly question.:-)

Charlie,

I agree that the spectrum of definitions you provide is encountered widely... I take exception to the terms top/bottom for dominant/submissive in the fetish world (boots, S&M, etc.) generally. (Yeah, I'm probably in the minority here.) It leads to a blurring of the lines and just plain confusion with regard to other acts. I think the terminology misplaced for any act other than anal intercourse. Bottoms may be receptive, but this doesn't mean submissive (hopefully). I've seem my share if nice aggressive bottoms -- eagerness is appreciated. :-) And the least appropriate use for top/bottom IMHO is especially for oral. It is my perception that the number of truly gay men who don't reciprocate is negligible in a statistical sense -- so what does it mean in practice (I'll get to versatile tops below). I'll concede the point for the straight guys providing trade, but this is a pathological case -- and 'top trade' is redundant in the extreme.

Now for 'versatile tops'...What does that mean? A top who will flip occasionally? as I hope, or a top who PERFORMS oral? If it is the latter then -- big deal!! All that means is that he is not TRADE, because if he doesn't do oral then what is the practical distinction with straight trade?

FWIW

Top, bottom and versatile

So while we are at it, let's introduce a new term to our new member, renuof.

Versatile: someone who would play both the "top" and "bottom" roles. Or according to the Concise Oxford Dictionary,

Bot. & Zool. moving freely about or up and down on a support:9

Do you just love those bicycle-riding, spectacled, old English scholars!? ;-) Imagine them trying to explain this term with body and hand movements!!! }>

Speaking as a Vers Top myself, my theory is this, if it doesnt fit in my mouth, it doesnt fit in my ass, so I therefore become the top:7
