I am addicted to Coming of Age films.

There are many different types of movies that fall under the Coming of Age banner. Some of the films in my Top 101 are: Another Day in Paradise, You Are Not Alone, Pixote, Basketball Diaries, Not Angeles But Angeles, Men Don't Leave, Almost Famous, Christiane F, The Browning Version, Sreetwise, Get Real, Toy Soldiers, and K.I.D.S.

It would be cool to read what movies you guys like on this topic.

101:

Here are some other titles I think you’d enjoy. Not all are strictly coming-out stories and Powder is not explicitly gay – but I found them all to be very moving. (All are available on DVD.)

 Edge of Seventeen (2000): Coming out during the gender-bending rock era

 Get Real (1999): Coming out in a British School

 Mandragora (1997): More about Prague Hustlers

 Powder (1995): Albino youth has amazing powers

 Steam: The Turkish Bath (1997): Married guy inherits steam bath, falls for caretaker’s son

 Defying Gravity (1997): Frat guy has big secret

 Don’t Tell Anyone (1998): Young man struggles with drugs, coming out in homophobic Lima

Enjoy!

BROKEN REEDS: A story about two French boys coming out

BEAUTIFUL THING: Ditto, only they're Brits

MAURICE: E.M. Forster's posthumous coming-of-age-and-out-at-Cambridge novel, realized by Merchant/Ivory

ANOTHER COUNTRY: Upper-class boy-love in an English public school, before they get to Cambridge or Oxford, with the divine Rupert Everett as the main sodomite

CINEMA PARADISO: Italian, heart-breakingly sweet, if straight

EUROPA EUROPA: About a beautiful Jewish boy who escapes the Nazis by pretending not to be Jewish

MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE: Daniel Day Lewis as a gay punk who brings out a handsome Pakistani youth, featuring inter alia what may be the most erotic male/male kiss ever to grace mainstream movie screen (hint: watch out for the champagne bottle)

AMARCORD: The greatest coming-of-age film of all time (IMHO), and perhaps Fellini's masterpiece

i agree with many of the above. however, the first gay coming of age film might be "tea and sympathy"; i think it's on video and makes an interesting period piece about gay life.

RE: Tea and Sympathy

Yes, it was a shocker in its (my) day. The climax was filmed in both "horizontal" and "vertical" versions. What ever happened to John Kerr?

Some great lists guys. Many are already in my Top 101 :) A few that I would like to add to the thread are: Murmur of the Heart, The Outsiders and CrissCross.

The latter featured David Arnott who has become something of a cult figure within the coming of age genre. Very little is known about him and this was the only film he apeared in. There are no records of any other type of appearances (i.e. television).

Coming soon is a film from director Larry Clark (Another Day in Paradise, KIDS, Buddy) called Ken Park. This project, written by Harmony Korine who penned KIDS, has been in the works for nearly 5 years. At one time it was thought to be a west coast version of KIDS. Now little information has been released about the film.

Well, I love reading about your favorites. Some of them brought back cool memories. Please keep posting on this topic if you care to.

Last Exit to Brooklyn. It's on my top 10 list of all time favorites, though not quite what I'd call a coming of age film. But it does offer youth and sex and drugs and violence and homosexuality and prostitution. Sadly--tragically--the young must grow up too quickly, the sex is loveless, drugs offer no euphoria, violence has no point, and homos and hookers don't escape persecution.

Thanks for the posting. I was unaware of this film.

Hey Traveller, we shouldn't reveal anything more about Last Exit to Brooklyn other than it's bleak and disturbing.

I will say that the book was originally banned for its "pornographic" and violent content. (Odd standards; other books far more sexual and violent passed censorship.) I suppose there are those who refuse (or allow others) to read about sex and violence unless both are accompanied by happiness.

And "what about when they pull the train on her"? A revealing side note: actress Jennifer Jason Leigh saw the film only once, becoming violently ill when watching her gang rape scene.

And hey Traveller, switching to another movie, is it you I recall quoting from Heathers?

Hmmm. It made me hungry for salad nicoise.

Yeh. Crashing through the glass table is an all-time classic scene. Speaking of fun women, what about Le Femme Nikita?

Later.

PS. And who can omit Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer?

Traveller, you are evil.

Awesome movie. I even love the American version, Point of No Return, mainly beacuse Harvey Keitel is brilliant. And Bridgette Fonda is my kinda girl.

>And who can omit

>Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer?

Even with the cheesey special effects, that film is hauntingly realistic. But enough already. Thanks to you, I'm watching A Clockwork Orange later tonight....I'm singing in the rain, (CRACK) just singing in the rain. (Clunk)

Fonda's best scene was in the parking lot in Jackie Browne.

But doesn't it give you a better appreciation of classical music, say, like the William Tell Overture.

And who's come up with a better word than "ultraviolence".....except for, maybe, "wilding."

Later.

PS. Finally, you've gotta love the smell of napalm in the morning. It smells like victory.

Great coming of age films:

1. Toilers and Wayfarers is hard to find, but is a nice low budget coming of age story.

2. Wild Reeds is a very french coming of age story.

3. Every one loves Beautiful Thing and so do I

4. Get Real is very good

5. One really interesting coming of age gay story, interesting in that it is surprisingly old but openly gay, is a french movie from the 50s entitled "This Special Friendship". It has an unnecessarily bleak ending, but it's still a sweet story. Check it out.

Enjoy.

One that I did not consider a coming of age film until I read some of the poster's favorites is "You'll get over it". French language film with subtitles making it annoying to watch because you can't leave the front of the TV but a very good film.

Posted

Skrubber,

I watched this film the other night (see Gay Cinema Night thread in this forum). I enjoyed it. The kid in the lead is a swimmer on his high school swim team. Yes, the subtitles are annoying, but the film itself was worth it.

I'm impressed 101. You wrote this in mid 2001. I doubt many people were aware of the upcoming film Ken Park back then.

Anybody know what happened to this poster. So far I have seen three cool threads he began.
