Now that Travis' add is back up and Mark's call has gone forth... I was going to hijack his thread for a not unrelated topic: Americanmaleescort.net, formerly Americanmale.net. However, I decided not to trample in his garden.

 

It used to be one of my top scouting sites. However, I now find it a major annoyance to use and it plain pisses me off. The issue... escort adds from all over the country/world under a specific locale. The last thing I want to spend time on when looking for an escort in Tampa are adds for Dallas, DC or Darussalam. And these are not isolated incidences of travel posts either. In some instances they approach half of the adds listed. It is not apparent until you have waited for the page to download, then you have to wait to return to the higher level page and try again. And it happens again. Sorta like sprinkling the emergency CPR instructions in the Yellow Pages. x(

 

It's one thing to post a travel add to a locale that expires or for an escort to place adds in neighboring areas. It is another to 'salt' the mine with a lot of useless fool's gold that has no present value to the miner. They charge escorts extra for placing adds under secondary locales -- I hope that is the motive or they are artificially inflating their inventory. But how much revenue are they losing because I don't frequent their site? Probably none.

 

I urge all to write their congressman to protest this practice... or maybe an email to Americanmaleescort.com will do. (Does this make me an activist?? Two causes in one month... in one lifetime!! :o )

 

Second gripe, minor annoyance -- the updated site format sucks!! Added top levels to navigate thru and the white backgound well, ... it sucks IMO.

I too am really pissed of by the way that site is going, starting when they went to Mancheck Plus (monthly fee) instead of Mancheck (yearly fee) as their AVS. Now they're beginning to use the AVS in order to provide the escort/model's web address and I wonder how long it will be before the get the escort to remove their address from the blub that accompanies their picture.

 

It's too bad, because it used to be a great resource, but now I wouldn't 'pay' for it.

Letting escorts choose to be advertised "nationally" or "internationally" is something that other sites do, especially Rentboy, and it would be nice to have an indication of where they're located before clicking through.

 

But the site is fast and I didn't find it to be off-putting. If I clicked through and saw someone was in a different location, I would just hit Back to return to the previous page. Since it was so fast, I didn't mind at all. However, are you using a fast connection to the Web? If not, then I could see how it might be aggravating.

 

On the flip side, while looking in one location, I found an interesting guy from another location I visit. So that was actually a benefit. (Advertising does work. )

I have no problem with national or international adds though they are useless to me. I've only flown one escort in, ever. Just segregate them so local shoppers don't have to page thru the international directory to make a local call. :+

I am using a dial-up while on travel and it is annoying as hell. Also, I find it annoying on my high-speed at home when I have to go thru the procedure half a dozen times or more. Guess I have less patience than you.

Similar misinformation from my "studies" as well. Recently sent an email to an escort in Zurich, he responded he lived in Phoenix. Ad has since disappeared under Schwiez. Another I tried, the email address was no good. Some recent updating has been done, but "quality control" is still lacking

My antipathy toward this particular "escort referral site" (American Male) has been documented on this site for over 1 year.

 

American Male still lists escorts with whom I've not worked for over 2 years.

 

Repeated requests to remove/update listing have been ignored.

 

Obviously, the "powers that be" in charge of this particular site have been asleep at the wheel. They have been financially benefitting from outdated pics, and I have consulted my attorney.

 

I strongly recommend that serious clients looking for quality men refer to the HooBoy site or RentBoy.com for reliable/current info.

All websites have issues. You've just enumerated problems with one site that we've seen over and over on other sites for years. I routinely see ads for guys I know personally who retired years ago.

 

Your site is great, Dave, but it has limited value. If you listed top/bottom/versatile/muscle worship only/etc. it might get more interest.

 

A lot of the guys you represent interest me, but if all they're gonna do is pose I'm not calling. You've got Arik Travis listed, but since I've read elsewhre that he's only interested in print work I'm wondering if he's a serious contender as an escort.

 

Your site doesn't clear anything up, and it could without being endangering.

I agree. Partially, it's because escorts come and go so quickly; partially, it may have to do with the amount of effort needed to keep the information up-to-date; and it may well have to do with some escorts not wanting their information updated.

 

Several examples chosen quickly at random:

 

(1) On the Meet Local Men page that pops up when you check out the Southern California listings here:

 

* Mark Austin and Brad Hanson are shown with pictures that are years old.

 

* Jack Sanders -- who is a hell of a nice guy and sexy as all get out -- is also shown with a picture that I think is somewhat dated. (Msg to Will: It just occurred to me that if you're ever in LA, this may well be a man you'd enjoy meeting. ).

 

* Aaron's pic is listed. But Aaron went back to Miami many months ago and, as far as I know, he's not available in LA now.

 

(2) On the Southern California escort listings here:

 

* Sean Hunter is shown with a picture that looks great. It is actually him -- minimally twelve years ago and I think probably fifteen years ago. This picture and the one with him in a red shirt have been used on escort sites for at least six or seven years and it was old even then. He looks nothing like this now and that's the reason he uses the old pictures. If he used current pics, no one would hire him.

 

* Chad #2 is listed but hasn't escorted, to the best of my knowledge, in at least two years.

 

* Jodie Hart's profile shows a great picture of him. Unfortunately, he hasn't looked like that in many years.

 

* Mark Austin's picture here is also years old.

 

(3) I saw Sean's (World Traveler) pic recently -- I think at Rentboy. But we were informed a few days ago that he died six months ago. Incidentally, he's not listed under LA here anymore but is still listed under NYC.

 

These are just a few examples chosen in the course of two or three minutes. I suspect I could quickly find similar errors on any of the major escort websites.

 

As I said above, I think many of the inaccuracies -- especially regarding age or picture -- are due to escorts not wanting to provide updated info, for obvious reasons. There may not be much the various sites can do about that. And escorts who stop escorting often just fade away.

 

However, it would be extremely easy for an inexperienced client to either spend a lot of time trying to contact someone who was no longer in the business or, worse, contact one of these guys without grossly-outdated pictures and be very, very disappointed.

 

Having said of this, these sites are free for all of us to use. We do well to remember that when we're about to bitch about them.

Indeed. You bring up interesting issues.

 

How many young guys thinking escorting would be a good idea put ads EVERYWHERE ... but forget to remove them when they change their mind and decide escorting really isn't their cup of tea after all?

 

Even worse, most of the webmasters just let 'em run forever. Asking to be removed is like asking for Papal absolution. It takes forever if it ever comes through at all.

 

One of the things I was glad to see start up on this site (and I think we have Barry to thank for it) is routine "reality checks". Emails go out asking if the guy is still working. Dead email addresses are reported. But more often, you'll see "Verification" at the top of the reviews.

 

I think we're unique in doing that, in the "ouvre" of escort websites.

 

It's interesting to me to see other "escort review" sites coming online, all of them using content copied directly from here.

 

They're not copying any of the verifications, or any of the other effort that goes into making HooVille what it is.

 

Immitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but at least don't do a half-assed job of it. ;-)
