We often read about the quality of air, and the health effects in cities like Delhi and Beijing. And then we see the air quality in a western city that, due most commonly to something like these fires have done in Toronto, or the 2019/2020 fires around Canberra, is worse than those cities where smoke in the air is a more regular feature.

We smile (at the unwanted fame, more likely than actual amusement) when we read about it, and don't think about the health effects on us, in our first world existences. But we know from Delhi that the effects are real. So mask up, avoid going out and breathing it if you can. And bask in the temporary notoriety, and look forward to when it clears away.

That smoke made its way to Montreal and New York City yesterday and other cities in the northeast US. It hit my town as well and persisted until 5pm when it cleared away. It would have been a beautiful day as there were no natural clouds, just smoke.
