well, good ol' youtube's algorithm suggested this to me.....no idea why, but part of the title ("amazing version") pulled me in......evidently produced about 1971 by New York's PBS station, channel 13 WNET, as part of a short-lived PBS show, "The Great American Dream Machine", according to a comment.....and, as always, those comments are fantastic.......

She blew an audition to play Dorothy on Golden Girls by inserting some cursing when she'd been warned not to.  She told the story in her one woman show.

but the explanation of why would make less sense than a Saint Olaf story

This would have been recorded shortly after she finished her run in the original production. In spite of the legendary difficulties in committing it to vinyl, her ownership of the song shall not be disputed.

thanks for all that......before a few minutes ago, I had no idea on the background or origins of this song........had never heard of the play, "Company"........or how much she was connected to the song.......(it was only the "amazing version" promotion in the youtube title that made me click it!)

We all get issued different "Gay Kits" with The Card. They contain the passions, tastes, attractions, skills, talents, curiosities that we seem to be known for. Some items we don't use much, some get developed, but there's always room to add more Stritchy - keep The Card, Add to The Kit.

Elaine Stritch At Liberty (2002)

This might give you context of her range, and is hilariously entertaining. This is from London, I saw it in LA. Legend.
