I don't remember much about the PE showers in my youth (late 70s, early 80s), but for an experience with boys and men naked together, there was one year, one time, at scout camp.

This year was a plain old summer camp (not at a formal camp with day programs, just free-form camping in the mountains).

One of the days, the troop had been hiking around a couple small lakes. Somehow, the suggestion of skinny dipping came up. So, about 2/3rds of the troop (but not me, I was too shy), along with the scoutmaster and assistant, stripped naked and went swimming in the lake.

Nothing unusual back then. Indeed, I bet the cold lake prevented anything embarrassing from ... popping up.

I was born in 1943 so I started swimming at the neighborhood park pool around 1950. In those days, bathing suits were made out of (scratchy) wool with a cotton belt. Lint clogged up the pumps, so naked swimming was de rigueur. There were of course different boys days and girls days. The college-age swim instructor would have on a suit while he was out of the water, but stripped naked to demonstrate in the pool. This is where my brother and I learned about cut and uncut, and what mature cock looked like.

By the time I went to Boy Scout camp, every day was naked swimming in a lake...scouts and scoutmasters alike. This is when I started mentally cataloguing the fascinating variety of cocks...pubescent, mature; cut, uncut; shower, grower; pink or dark; hairy or bald or peach fuzz; low hangers or undescended; big or small. There was one blond twinkie who had not yet started to grow pubic hair...every day he would sit out in the sun naked, hoping the sun would grow hair. He was the scoutmaster's son, who obviously did not object. I wish I would have known then what I know now, and I would have volunteered to massage it for him. My last year at cam, I had a tent mate who had just started to get erections, which he exhibited with great pride to the rest of us. Long, fat, curved to the left. I will never forget it. I wanted to hold it, but he said I could look but he was the only one who got to touch it.

In high school, it was gang showers. The gym teacher's office was adjoining the showers, and there was a picture window (with venetian blinds) into the shower room so the teacher could keep an eye on the showers. Later it turned out two of the teachers (although not gym teachers) were arrested for sexually abusing students...one of them, my very favorite teacher. I have always been sorry he didn't get it on with me...would have saved me years of confusion.

Yes. My gym teachers all showered in the same large shower room as the students throughout Junior High and High School ( 1980s )

Did you mean at the same time as you and your classmates?

Yes. Not ALL the gym teachers all at once, but if we were out playing football and the gym teacher was on the field working with us, he jumped in the shower to rinse off before his next class. Wrestling is a particularly sweaty sport for a gym teacher as he really does need to get down with us and participate. So that one also would rinse off after every class. There was just one big room with about 20 shower heads. The wrestling coach was a fairly young(ish) man. Italian with slightly reddish hair. Great thick body and meaty ass. Also a very nice man. Never thought much about it at the time. It was all fairly normal, but in hind-sight it does seem highly sexualized.

In my school system (assuming my memory is correct) during  7th grade 'competitive athletics' wasn't a separate period. 7th grade football was flag football, and I think the athletes were even encouraged to play on an outside the school system football league (YFL=Youth Football League) which was tackle football simultaneously while playing school system flag football. That meant that in my every other day gym class we were mixed. There  were athletes as well as the totally inept like me and the thugs (the guys who smoked cigarettes on the corner across the street from the school prior to the start of the day and at lunch).

Starting in 8th grade all the athletes took a 6th period PE Class (6th period being the last period of the day) during which they practiced their sport and which led into after school practice. So from 8th grade on, the ones left in regular PE were all the non athletic kids-but there were a few who were still athletic although not playing team sports for whatever reason.

I don't remember ever seeing a coach shower with us in regular PE. I don't know if they ever did after practice with the athletes.
