In the '80s and '90s when I was going to the sex clubs a lot, I had to quit going during high flu season...with everyone exchanging saliva and other bodily fluids, I would be sick all the time. So knocking it off from December - March or so did the trick. Out of flu season, "most" people aren't carrying the bug and it's pretty safe. In flu season, you can be sure at least one person is, and then everyone is.

I’ve started gargling with an antibacterial mouthwash (peroxide based) after such encounters to minimize similar experience.
