I know one other couple who use and enjoy their 2nd home regularly, and it's a similar situation to what you described:  a 60-90 minute drive away from their 1st home and on a lake.

Any further than a 90-minute drive and the 2nd home gets used less and less, as the travel becomes tedious.

Other friends have a 2nd home much further away, and after a few years they want to sell or rent it out because they just don't travel to their 2nd home enough to justify keeping it as a vacation home.

My cottage was only 60 km from Ottawa so only took an hour to get there as the last 20 kms were rough roads. But different from Cooper’s place, 1 hour north of Ottawa you can be in wilderness. No restaurants, clubs, other places of entertainment. Just Mother Nature. Which is more than enough if one is trying to leave the city life.
