I follow him on social media and see that he goes to Fort Lauderdale several times a year. He’s always with a nice group of guys. I have just made a last-minute decision to go to Fort Lauderdale. Some, less secure ones might be threatened by the competition but your description of your guy sounds to me like he may be in the former group.
