That Jane Goodall tramp has died

The Far Side creator Gary Larson was almost sued by the Jane Goodall Foundation for a strip where a gorilla called her a “tramp.”When the executive director of the foundation saw the strip, she immediately called in lawyers. However, when Goodall was shown the comic, she laughed and called it “Fantastic.” The end result was that the panel was put on T-shirts, and sold to fund the Jane Goodall Foundation.

The strip in question, which ran in 1987, shows two chimpanzees, one male and one female, sitting on a branch in a tree. The female chimpanzee is picking hairs off the back of the male and says, “Well, well–another blond hair. Conducting a little more ‘research’ with that Jane Goodall tramp?”

I think Jane Goodall would be delighted that people remember her with a laugh when reminded of this cartoon and the story it generated, rather than with an unalloyed sadness at her passing. She had a long life, she inspired people, and was continuing to live her life to its full for all her 91 years, on a speaking tour even this week.

Not everyone can take kindly to being the subject of gentle, or even any, humour or satire, much less turn it to their advantage. To do so demonstrated her strength, character and self-awareness.

I think she was great.  But to me, her biggest success was living 91 years without having her face ripped off by one of those chimps.  They're incredibly dangerous in certain circumstances.
