Equinox Steam Rooms (NYC)

Hi all,

I recently joined Equinox and I'm really enjoying it. I heard from other people that the steam rooms can be notorious with guys playing around. I have yet to see anything like that since when I go it's somewhat busy, so I imagine it's difficult to do it during peak hours. I was wondering if there was a particular time frame you are most likely to encounter something like that and which NYC locations. I hear Columbus Circle and 50th Street are most active because of the proximity to Hells Kitchen. Thank you!

I’ve been a member for a while and it’s actually been pretty rare for that to happen. When I used to goto NYSC it was a thing that happened often and I participated.

I recommend going during down times. 50th and Columbus Circle are pretty notorious but I wouldn’t risk my member on a moment unless it happened naturally.

I’ve always found Rock Center to be the most consistent. Between their massive steam room and the sauna across the way, and the “straight” finance bros that swing by on their lunch hour, I’ve always had fun there even in the quietest of times. Sometimes it gets way too busy for my personal liking, and then you have the trolls who do nothing but go back and forth between the steam and the sauna, but also having the rows of showers that face each other… opportunities are endless. Just don’t get caught

I love this question!  I'm a big fan of the Equinox locker room in NYC.  It's a financial splurge that I twist myself in knots to justify, but I do love it.

Equinox is great if you're like me and you enjoy casual non-sexualized nudity among men.  Agreed that Rockefeller Center is the best I know of for that vibe.  You do get a lot of straight guys doing what I call the high-school-swim-team-change, where you fully wrap a towel before changing.  But a lot of guys - myself included - are comfortable carrying a towel rather than wrapping it.  Heavily mixed gay/straight population, which can sometimes be hard to navigate in terms of knowing who's who.

In terms of mischief, Rock Center is still the best location.  (You can find it at Columbus Circle in the steam room, but you have to be willing to hang long term in hopes lightning strikes.  Liable to be a big waste of time.)  The advice I'd give at Rock Center is: don't be fooled by all the nooks and crannies.  Most of it is NOT a safe space.  The cleaning staff is on the lookout, and the will bust guys for sharing a shower.  So don't try that.  The sauna may also seem safe, but it is not.  The steam room - while the steam is on, with an eye on the door - is the only real opportunity.  If you're careful and patient, you can have some super hot experiences there!

Though the rule for me is... the hottest guys always want to suck me off when I'm on my way to a client.   It's like they know!

Equinox isn't as frisky as it used to be, especially since more 'gay' gyms have opened.

They also realize the reputation they were getting and started revoking memberships when people got caught.

I echo the comments on Rock Center, it's VERY active if a touch unpredictable.  Be cautious and observant and you'll quickly figure out who your allies are there.  I've done far more things there than I would have ever imagined was possible in a public place.

Interesting.  Where do you see gay gyms opening in NYC?

This is true.  Rock Center in NYC was getting a lot of canceled memberships for inappropriate behavior.  But also most of that was based on reckless behavior.  There's a lot of hidden corners there that feel tempting but aren't safe.  If you're getting into someone's shower, and the shower has a translucent door, you're visible to anyone walking by.  You're going to get caught.

At a gym in Michigan, I and another guy got caught in the group shower with hard-ons, we hadn't started anything yet other than looking.  The attendant took us the the office and made a big show of cancelling memberships, but it seemed like a show, and it turned out he'd just printed something out that meant nothing.  I went back (keeping an eye out for that attendant) a few days later and my membership was still active.

I've had my fair share of attendants at Equinoxes here in the city linger and enjoy the view when I've showered with the door slightly open. That's always turned me on and, at least in my mind, given me the green light to be a little more playful in the steam room during that attendant's shift. Chances were he wasn't going to report me when he's standing there watching me soap up. 

By the by, anyone else enjoy just sitting in the steam room without a towel covering themselves when they're alone? I just find it so freeing and enjoyable. If someone comes in of course I cover up but sometimes, if it's something they enjoy too, it gives them some sense of "permission" to do it as well and then we're just two guys steaming naked, whether or not anything comes of it.
