I used the "Ask a Moderator" forum to ask that question myself, some time ago.  They responded very quickly:

"A star means you have participated in that topic.  A dot means you have not.

If a topic in the topic list is bolded, it means there are unread replies in that specific topic."

Made an appointment day prior.  the morning of meeting, I Confirmed meeting time for 1:30 pm...  and he asked me to move it back an hour to 2:30.  I agree.  

At 2pm he texts me to say, , "you can come over now".  I reply "I'm on my way."  As I knock on the door 10 minutes later, he  texts me to say, "Sorry I had to leave a moment."  I can hear voices on the other side of the door.  He's clearly there.  I texted him to say "I'll wait until 2:30."  He never replied so I left. 

If you hire, be prepared for the possibility that he flakes out. Sooo frustrating!

My experience was the opposite.  Started off responsive, and then he became  non responsive and non-communicative.
