I agree. This is technically illegal, all this, but people are so paranoid. Don’t be a jerk and you’ll be fine.

I’ve done this several times in two ways.  Either I’ve reimbursed him for the hotel booking or gave him cash in the parking lot to book.

I wouldn’t want to leave him in a room linked to my personal info.

I use the same principle for guys requiring Uber.
